You Are My Sunshine Pillow {Anthro Knock Off #6}

We’ve made it!  The final day of Anthropologie Knock Off Week.  I, for one, am completely exhausted!  It’s been such a fun week, but WOW! a bit of a whirlwind!!  On top of this challenge, my ‘nesting’ instinct has taken over, and I’m on a mission to get this house ready for a baby (any day ..).  Matt even told me that he thought he was nesting when he decided to stay home from work Monday morning and clean out and organize our entire entryway closet (with no request or hinting from me whatsoever!!).  And, lemme tell you … it was the best thing EVER!!

But, enough about our chaos and craziness, and on with my Day 6 Anthro Knock Off … You Are My Sunshine Pillow:

When I saw this pillow on Anthro’s site, I fell in LOVE!  I knew I wanted to make this pillow for my boys’ new Shared Big Boy Room (that is taking forever to complete, by the way).  ‘You Are My Sunshine’ is one of like three songs I sing to them at night or nap time to help them fall asleep.  If you know me (in person) I’m a terrible singer, and in the car my boys yell ‘NO NO NO” most of the time when I sing out loud, BUT they seem to like my version of this song.  It’s kinda our thing since I won’t sing to them if anyone else is around (except Molly … she’s allowed to enjoy endure my singing).

So … here are the details to MY version of this pillow:

SUPPLIES (for a 20″ square pillow):

  1. Fabric of your choice (I like home dec / canvas weight for pillows) cut into three pieces:
    1. 20″ x 20″ square for front (I used this striped fabric for the front)
    2. Two pieces cut to: 14″ x 20″ for back overlapping panels (I used plain white canvas for the back)
  2. Bias Tape Maxi Piping … enough to cover all four sides of your pillow.
  3. Iron On Transfer Paper for light fabric (if your pillow fabric is light … obviously).
  4. Pillow insert (use a 40% off coupon to get one from JoAnn).
  5. Iron
  6. Printer
  7. Usual sewing supplies (thread, machine, etc)

PROCESS:

STEP 1:  Design wording and play around with size.

I ended up using a font called Market Deco (get it here) at 120 point.  Once you think it’s close to the right size, print it on regular printer paper, cut out words and lay out on front pillow cover piece to determine if it’ll work:

LAY OUT THE WORDS TO DETERMINE IF SIZE IS CORRECT

STEP 2:  Once you’re happy with the size of the text, print it out onto your transfer paper according to the instructions.

You will have to flip (mirror) your text and then print.  Since I could NOT figure out how to do this in word or in my printer settings (and I was loosing patience trying to figure it out), I ended up ‘printing’ it to a pdf.  Under the printer options for Adobe, it did have the option to mirror text.  I then printed the PDF (with mirrored text) onto my transfer paper.  I’m sure most of you can find an easier way to do this (in fact, I’m sure of it!).

STEP 3:  Cut out each of the words and lay in place on the fabric.  I used a line of tape to keep a straight line across the fabric.  Then, I taped on each word where I wanted it.

CUT WORDS OUT OF TRANSFER PAPER AND LAY IN PLACE ON FABRIC

STEP 4:  Iron on words according to transfer paper instructions.

TIP:  Make sure to iron entire transfer paper area (not just where the actual text is).  For each of the taped on words shown above, I started to iron one side (away from the tape), then as that started to stick, I pulled off the tape and ironed over the entire rectangle.

I went row by row, moving my tape line down each time.

IRONED ON TEXT

STEP 5:  Place, pin, and sew piping in place on this front piece.

Sewing on piping is pretty simple.  Just lay it out around the edge of your front panel.  The piping should be towards the inside (with the flat bias tape part towards the outside):

PIN PIPIING IN PLACE

Sew around flat part of piping (as close to the round part as possible) attaching it to front pillow panel.

STEP 6:  Sew pillow together.

Follow detailed instructions here to create an envelope pillow cover.  You’ll want to lay your back panel pieces down first … right sides UP.  These pieces should be overlapping in the center so that they make a square the same size as your front piece.  (Also, you’ll want the overlapping edges hemmed … see tutorial for details).  Then place the front piece face DOWN onto the back pieces.  Now, right sides of all pieces should be facing.  Pin all pieces together.  Then sew around pillow following the stitch you just made from sewing on the piping.

THAT’S IT!  PILLOW COVER COMPLETE!

COMPLETED PILLOW COVER!

Now stuff with a pillow insert …

And place in the new ‘BIG BOYS’ ROOM’:

PILLOW IS COMPLETE … NOW WHERE IS THE REST OF THE ROOM?!?!

Oh wait … the room is EMPTY and not quite ready for furniture {still}.  At least it has a fancy new pillow, a rolled up IKEA mattress, painted and sealed floors, and almost painted walls.  Making progress … slowly!!!

The pillow does look nice on our new ‘pickled’ wood floors, though, huh (more on that to come … eventually)?

Stopping by from the Turn it up Tuesdays Linky Party to say Hi!! :)

  4. This is a lovely cushion and I especially like how it just finishes that room off nicely!
Seriously though, it’s lovely and very do-able with your instructions. I’ve never worked out flipping words in Word either, I usually do things like this in publisher or powerpoint (sounds funny to use powerpoint but it is very flexible and you can just print the pages so I use it less for presentations and more for everything else!) You can just flip the text boxes then which is easy peasy!

  5. Who is Anthro and why is anyone on the planet paying their extortionist prices??? The knock-offs are way more sensible. In this horrible economy, who can afford or want to spend their hard-earned money on such outrageous prices. Love your projects!

  14. Okay what is transfer paper, from like Office Max, of from say places like Hobby lobby, or Michaels? I have been looking for something to do for project I want to do and I have found so many I am now confused. I want something that is soft, not hard, so that rules out modpodge (sp). Then regular transfer paper like for Tshirts is stiff. Then there transfer fabric and I don’t know about that one. As I have done a pillow case with a full image with the transfer paper and it is stiff. Any Tips?

    • Hi Diane,
I use the Jolee’s transfer paper from Michael’s (or Joann). It is designed for T-shirt transfer, but I didn’t find it to be too plasticy. Maybe because I cut it up into small pieces and just kept enough of the plastic for right around the words. After I washed it once, it seemed to be plenty soft. The backing disappeared in most places around the letters.

Hope that helps! Thanks for the questions. Have a great week!
      XO,
      Katie
