Welcome to our home … Living and Dining Room Tour

March 19, 2014
Living Room

Happy Wednesday!  Last week (while we were off enjoying the ocean), I gave you a tour of our kitchen.  We’ve made some progress in there, but there’s still quite a long wishlist!  As a part two of this Home Tour series … today, I’m taking you through our living and ‘dining’ room.  I say ‘dining’ (in quotes) room because it’s empty.  There is no dining going on in there at the moment.  We think this space is meant to be a formal dining room, but right now it’s just a make-shift soccer court for the boys (husband included).

So … let’s get to the spaces, shall we?

Here’s the living room … current state:

and looking into the ‘soccer court’ / dining room:

We haven’t done much work to these rooms, but we have made a couple changes.  Here’s the before:

The biggest change was moving the TV from that giant hole in the wall (on the right wall above) to above the fireplace.  With that move, we rearranged the sofa to face the fireplace AND TV.  The other main change is the painted bookcases.  We’re on a mission to repaint everything in this room … white.  Walls (they’re sort of a dingy white now), trim, ceiling, windows, doors, etc … all of it!

Now, some items on our ‘wishlist’ for this room …

  • Finish refinishing the trim and paint walls and all remaining trim white (including windows, doors, molding at ceiling, bottom trim, etc.  We’re not going for the ‘antique’ look here with our trim … just in the process of trying to strip down the many layers of paint so we can smoothly repaint it.
  • Add art / pictures / gallery … something(!!)  to the large white wall.
  • Consider also painting, wallpapering, or stenciling an accent wall (grey stripes?).

Next on the wishlist …

  • New window treatments … consider curtains for the windows (after all trim and walls over on this wall are nice and white)
  • Replace rug … hopefully with something that doesn’t blend in with the floors!  Can you even see the rug in the picture below??? Not the best online purchase I’ve ever made :(

Now, you may have noticed Molly making herself at home in that chair.  She sits there at least half the day … probably more when it’s sunny out.  She thinks the back cushion to this chair … and to the whole couch next to it, are her own dog beds.  She sits smack dab on top of them and smushes them down.  Our couch and chair cushions are never … and I mean never … in the right spot.

Therefore, also on the wishlist …

  • New couch with TIGHT back instead of cushions (that Molly can’t sit on and move around).
  • New accent chair (also sans back cushion)
  • New dog bed for Molly … in a sunny corner on the floor :)

Eventually, we’d also like to build up the bookcases on either side of the TV to the ceiling and across the top of the TV.  Right now, I’m struggling with what to do with the blank space on either side of the TV.  Suggestions welcome …

Now … for the ‘dining’ room:

  • Obviously, we’d like to get a table.  In my head, I’m picturing a big round chunky farmhouse table that fits 10+ people (though I haven’t actually measured to see if such a table exists, and if so … if it will fit).
  • We’d like to get a buffet for under our artwork (the current buffet in the picture is a recent Goodwill find, and will be going somewhere else once we decide on where).
  • Window treatments for these windows (even though they are not exterior windows)
  • New light fixture (above the new table)
  • Paint all the walls, trim, doors, windows … Cloud White

Here’s my {tentative} vision for the two spaces …

I love grey and navy, but I also love the look of natural wood.  I’d like to combine both into these spaces.  I’m hoping that the cool grey and navy tones plus the warmer wood and coral tones will work well together.  As always … thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated!!

Well … that’s the living and ‘dining’ room tour!  We definitely have some work to do in these spaces, but I’m hoping we can slowly chip away at it.  One of these days, I’m pretty sure the perfect mid-century buffet is going to show up at Goodwill just begging me to take it home.  As for the rest of the furniture on the wishlist, we’ll slowly have to accumulate it over time.  That is, unless we win the lottery (which I guess we’d have to play for that to happen).  Hmmm …

Next week, I’m bound and determined to have the bathroom ready to show you.  I still have a couple things I’d like to finish up in there, but I should be able to finish in a week!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  And, please …. I’d love suggestions, ideas, examples to help with figuring out what to do with these spaces!!

Thanks, Angela. Now … if I could just figure out how to build those bookcases up to the ceiling, I wouldn’t have to worry about what to do with that white empty space!

Katie, you have a beautiful home and awesome taste! I like the vision you have for the space with the navy/natural wood combo with a pop of color! I can’t wait until we are not renting anymore and I can do stuff like this too!

I love the plans you have. My suggestion for either side of T.V. would be paint it out in the dark stripe colour that you have chosen for the accent wall. It would make the T.V. disappear…

Bette!!! This is a great idea!! I’m super pumped, and totally going to do it! Thank you for the suggestion. Hopefully, the Next time you see this room, it will have stripes on both walls. You rock!

Katie your house is amazing!! I can’t get over all these special little places you have. The built in shelving everywhere is awesome. I’m really looking forward to seeing the rest of your house. especially the front!

Thanks, Courtney! I love the built in shelving, too, though it is a HUGE pain to paint!! Once the front is visible beneath the snow mounds, I’ll post a picture. When it comes to landscaping and anything involving live plants, I struggle, though. So, the outside of our house is always my biggest challenge. Stay tuned …

Having white trim makes a space look more clean. I love having white trim in my house.
