‘Unique’ Thrift Store Upcycle

April 16, 2014
Thrift Store Upcycled Frame | View From The Fridge

I have a bit of an odd project to share with you today.  It’s a thrift store upcycle project, and you know I love those, but the end result is a bit odd (at least that’s what my hubby thinks).

It involves a old frame, teacup, a doorbell, and of course … spray paint.

Interested yet?

Well … I’ll save you the suspense.  Here she is:

Thrift Store Upcycled Frame | View From The Fridge

This idea has been stuck in my head since I was visiting the ladies room at Blackbird Cafe in Minneapolis several months ago (best sandwiches ever … by the way).   Here’s the picture they had on the wall (yes … I took a couple pictures while using the facilities!):

Blame the crazy pregnancy hormones, or just call me a bit off in general, but I have been sort of obsessed with it since.  Odd, huh?  It was just hanging there next to the sink and mirror, and made me laugh.

Ever since … I’ve been on a mission to make one for our bathroom.  Problem was … I just couldn’t find the right frame (I wasn’t trying overly hard to track one down, however).  It’s been my ‘excuse’ to not give you a tour of our bathroom (like I mentioned I would a month ago).  It just wasn’t finished without this picture!!

Good ol’ Goodwill to the rescue!  On Monday, I found this frame, and figured it would work (less the ceramic teacup and brownish orange velvet):

LOVELY 3D TEACUP FRAMED PICTURE!

And, just so you get the full 3D-ness of this artwork, here’s another angle:

Thrift Store Upcycled Frame | View From The Fridge

QUITE THE INTRICATE DETAILS, NO?

I must say, it was quite spendy for Goodwill … $9.99, but I was okay with that if it meant finally ‘finishing’ our bathroom update (that blank spot on the wall has been staring me down for months)!!  To my {happy} surprise, it was a blue tag, and on Monday that meant 50% off apparently!  Hooray … $5 was even better!

I got it home, and went to work (with some odd looks from Matt as to what I had just brought home).  I ripped off the velvet (with teacup still attached), removed the cardboard backing and spray painted it two coats of glossy white.

Then I added some grey and white striped scrapbook paper to the backing, some stick on letters (from Michael’s), and a doorbell I had lying around … and I was done!!  Bathroom … DONE (finally)!!  Oh … and I was totally lying about the doorbell ‘lying around’ (that’d be pretty odd, too).  I purchased it from Amazon right after seeing the ‘inspiration’ picture at Blackbird.  If you also happen to find yourself needing one … here’s the one I bought.  :)

COMPLETE!

FINALLY!!

And here it is finally occupying that empty space next to the mirror that’s been driving me crazy for several months:

And a ‘partial’ view of our NOW COMPLETE bathroom update (more on that to come … ):

So … odd obsession with that small little frame, huh??  I realize I really should be concentrating on things like creating a room for baby 3, washing clothes for baby 3, cleaning the baby toys for baby 3, etc … , but now that my doorbell champagne picture is complete … that’s just what I’ll do!

Thanks for stopping by to take a look at my odd project today!  Have you ever had a strange obsession with something so silly?  Please let me hear about it … I’d love to know that I’m not crazy!

Hi Ginnie! So I just searched for ‘press for champagne’ on pinterest, and it turns out these are all over the place. I guess my taste isn’t so ‘odd’. Thanks for stopping by! Have a great rest of your week!

I love this Katie! I can see why it would stick in your brain after seeing it on the wall in the ladies room. I would’ve totally pulled out my camera too (I do this a lot – especially down the home décor aisles at retailers where I can turn around and make the same thing for a fraction of the cost). Love the pretty striped paper you used against the white frame – very pretty.

Ha! Thanks! It probably makes more sense in the kitchen, but the bathroom really needed a piece of ‘quirky’ art.

The only thing odd was the three dimensional teacup and that someone at Goodwill was crazy enough to price it for $9.99! I’m so glad you found it though, because once you got a hold of it, it became great! I love the paper & fonts your choose. And that you painted the frame white – I’ve got a growing obsession with white frames!

Katie, I just love this. I am always on the lookout for anything that says ‘Champagne’. This particular project is super, and I just finished spray painting a gorgeous frame in white. I am really excited to make this.
My maiden name is Champagne and I took it back after the divorce. I wouldn’t want any other name. Thanks so much and my best to you. Pat.

So … I did keep the teapot for a week. It was just sitting on our kitchen counter. I just couldn’t throw it away … I could do something with it right?!?! This morning, however, I was sick of looking at it, and tossed it in the garbage. Not sure if I’m regretting that move or not, but at least it’s not cluttering up my counter anymore!

Thanks for the note! Hope you’re having a good week!
