Touring Through Blogland

July 14, 2014
Welcome to our home!

Happy Monday Afternoon!  I was thrilled to be asked by Shelly of Minette’s Maze to share a little bit about myself, my family, my home, and my blog.  It’s all part of a grand ‘Tour’ through blogland.  Shelly passed the invite on to me … and I’ll send it on to a couple more bloggers at the end of this post who will each share their tours NEXT Monday.  Basically, it’s a way (for me and for you) to meet new bloggers and their blogs, check out some behind the scenes action, and learn a little more about the ladies behind these blogs.

A huge thanks to Shelly for the opportunity to be a part of this!  I met Shelly when I joined the DIY Sunday Showcase Link Party Team earlier this year.  Shelly is a fellow ‘boy mom’ who lives in Nebraska and has some great style!  Seriously … she’s SO creative.  I love her ability to take ‘junk’ and turn it into some awesome, unique decor!  If you haven’t already, stop over and check out her blog now.

So … let’s get this tour and the behind-the-scenes peek started …

Come on in …

Welcome to our home!

Welcome to our home!

Okay … so if you’re really observant, you’ll notice several things about this picture …

Number One:  We’re wearing coats and there are pumpkins (and evergreens, hmm)

Number Two:  We only have one child

Number Three (you have to really know us to catch this one):  Molly is thin thinner

As you may have guessed … this is not a recent picture.  I looked, and I just can’t find a recent picture of the outside of our house and right now we’re in the process of replacing all that wood decking (= a mess, and therefore no picture).

Anyway … Welcome to our home.  The main part was built in the 1860’s (that’s 150 years ago for you Math majors!!), so it has some great character (and also some HUGE ‘challenges’).

Back in March of this year, I started a series called Welcome to Our Home, and hoped to give you a tour of our home a room at a time each week.  Well … we still haven’t finished that tour, but c’mon in, and I’ll give you the quick version …

You like those Pampers Box organizers, huh?!?  We’re getting there … slowly … very slowly ..

Here are the questions I was asked to answer:

>>  Question One  <<

What am I working on?

Well … about 47 different crafty projects and about 28 DIY home ‘updates’.

Oh … you want more specifics?  Well … my to-do list is about 100 items long (and grows by the day), but right now I’m working on:

Finishing the big boys’ room.  We’re soooo close.  Just need to touch up some paint and hang the closet door.

Owen & Charlie's Room

Owen & Charlie’s Room

Finishing Ben’s room (aka ‘The Nursery’), though he doesn’t actually use it one bit right now:

Nursery ... still in progress1!

Nursery … still in progress1!

We’re also working on fixing our front patio (reason I have no picture of the front of our house), updating/maintaining the landscaping, installing a radon fan in the basement (actually our #1 priority as we tested positive for radon), building a closet for our master bedroom, and …

Taking care of our newest addition, Ben:

And our other two:

Really I just was looking for a reason to add some cute boy faces to the post.

>>  Second Question  <<

How Does My Work Differ From Those Of My Genre?

First of all … ‘my work’?  This confuses me, as I don’t consider anything I do ‘work’.  Mostly because I’m SUCH an amateur , and partly because it doesn’t seem like ‘work’ … more like a hobby (an ever-more involved and time consuming hobby).

Secondly … what is my ‘genre’?

I’m not sure what this means exactly, but as I look back on what I’ve done … I’d say I’m motivated by a good knock off challenge.  It’s kind of a annoying at times, but if I see something I like in a store or magazine my first thought is … how could I make this?  I’m pretty sure that’s why it’s taking so long to decorate our home.  I have a hard time buying anything.  I tell myself “I can make that,” but in reality … I don’t have the time (and probably won’t for the foreseeable future).

Besides a good knock off … I love anything white, grey, or possibly gold.  I love modern mixed with rustic.  I love a good thrift store upcycle.  I love pieces with meaning.  And I love a good bargain (who doesn’t).  My hubby is financial advisor, so he’s also a huge fan of thriftiness (though he sometimes doesn’t love the space the thrift store finds occupy prior to their makeovers).

The Hubs

The Hubs … LONG story behind why I forced him to model this …

Moving on … (quickly … Matt is NOT going to be happy I brought that picture out of the archives).

>>  Third Question  <<

Why do I write/create what I do?

I went to school for Industrial Engineering.  How’s that for creative?  I worked for 8 years as a Manufacturing Engineer/Process Engineer/Materials Manager.  Very mathematical.  Lots of spreadsheets.  Steel toed boots.  Safety glasses and ear plugs (very attractive!).  Lots of numbers, theories, and {sometimes usually dirty} factories.

I guess I didn’t realize how much I missed being creative until I became a part-time stay at home mom, and then, more recently,  a full-time stay at home mom to three little boys.  I started this blog to help document some of our projects.  Some of my crafts.  Some of our house progress.  And some random thoughts along the way.  This blog started as a side project, and has developed into so much more.  It’s my creative outlet.  And, to my surprise, the blogging ‘community’ is really fun, supportive, encouraging, and engaging (not to mention a bit addicting).  It’s a way to connect with other women who are, in a way, very similar to me.  Maybe someday I’ll actually meet some of them IN PERSONimagine that!

>>  Last Question <<

How does your writing/creative process work?

Let’s start with my creative process.  Or lack of process.  Actually, I don’t have one.  Maybe it’s a sub-concious rebellion to my years as a process engineer, but my ‘process’ is nonexistent.  Here’s a sample of my mornings …

  • Wake up … feed baby while attempting to do some social media stuff on my phone.
  • Feed other two boys breakfast (preferably before they get too hungry and crabby)
  • Go to the park/library/on a long walk.  Something active.  Physical activity seems to be a necessity for us all to survive the day.
  • Feed boys (all three) again.
  • Attempt to get O & C to nap (about 30% success rate lately).

If Ben also decides to nap during this time (first I almost pass out in shock, then) …

  • Run around like a crazy lady trying to:
    1. Do laundry
    2. Put dishes in dishwasher
    3. Vacuum
    4. Pick up toys from under kitchen table, in bathroom, under couch, in my office.
    5. craft, sew, decorate, take pictures, etc
    6. water plants

They usually go in that order, and I’m pretty sure that’s why all my plants have a death sentence.

My creative process is very extensive in my head, however in reality … it’s much less so.  Right now … I do what I have time for.  Between feedings, between walks, between park visits, between refereeing fights … I attempt to put what’s in my mind into action.

At night, when all three little ones happen to be asleep, I steal my hubby’s computer and edit photos, connect on social media, try to reply to comments (I suck lately, sorry) and write.  I wish I could spend more time on the writing part (and probably need to spend more time on the editing part), but time just doesn’t allow right now.

I also just got the 6 week-postpartum-okay-to-exercise-approval from my doc, so now I also have that on my to-do list.  And … by the way, getting back into shape SUCKS!!

Chaotic … to say the least.

Now … I’m passing the baton to these there ladies and their awesome blogs:

First up, Bette from Somerset Lane:

Hello, I’m Bette!  I’m a 29 year old mom (actually 40 something, but who’s keeping track) living in Southwest Ontario with my 3 kids, gorgeous hubby, puppy and kitty.  My hubby and my kids are my life.  Throughout the day you will find me cruising the blogsphere,  scrapbooking, cooking, cleaning, organizing and hanging out with my kiddos and my fur babies.  I consider myself the CEO of the Household. One thing you will not find me doing is ironing.  Last year, I threw away my ironing board because the cobwebs on it were scaring me. Over the last couple of years I’ve taken up woodworking, and although I’m very far from being good at it, I’ve created a few things that I’m proud of. (look here).  I started my blog to keep track of my life in my 40’s… I mean… 29th year.

Next up, Bre from Brepurposed

Hi everyone, I’m Bre! I started my blogging journey after getting married last summer and needed a new creative outlet. I quickly fell in love with repurposing old furniture and hope you’ll join me as I stalk Craigslist, thrift stores and friend’s basements to find those hidden gems and give them new life.

And third, Erin from The Blue Eyed Dove

I’m Erin, and I am your typical Midwest girly girl. I am a big fan of color (the more the better, right?), and tend to use it a lot in my home decor and diy projects. Even though my blog mainly consists of all things crafty, I also enjoy keeping up with the latest fashion trends, making healthy recipes and discussing some of my favorite Real Housewives from time to time!  I welcome you stop by for a visit to see some of my latest projects.

All three of these ladies has a great blog! Definitely worth checking out! Be sure to drop by and check out their tours NEXT Monday! Thanks for stopping by for my tour today!

Thanks for inviting me to join the “Tour of Blogland”, Katie! I love the use of color that you have incorporated in your home decor (I’m sure that isn’t surprising coming from me :)) The pics of the boys and Matt…in the apron (ha ha!) are great too! I of course think you do an excellent job with your posts and projects all while keeping busy with life :) Have a great week!

Thanks for the tour! I should have poured myself a cup of coffee and then I’d have really felt like we were hanging out and visiting in your gorgeous kitchen. I don’t know how you’re managing to do it all these days. I’m so impressed. It’s great to get a sneak peek behind the scenes at the craziness that is your life these days.

Wow Katie!! You have such a beautiful home and family! I’m totally in love with your kitchen! And I know exactly what you mean as far as trying to keep up with life and blogging. I have 2 boys that are quite a bit older than yours but to let you in on a secret… It’s not gonna get any easier. Boo I know. When they are little it’s physical exhaustion and when they get my kids age…pure mental exhaustion! The role as a referee will deff be more frequent! Lol they are boys, it’s just what they do! I love your tour and honesty! Your real! And that’s what I love! Thank you for showing us around and letting us all in! And tell your hubby..thanks for the giggle! I love when we can capture them being goofy!!

Oh, Shelly … you’re too kind! Yes … I had a feeling life might get more busy. I keep looking back on when I only had one kid and thought I was SOOO busy. Then two kids. I wonder if I’ll look back on this time in a couple years, when they’re all in activities every night, and think … “why did I think I was so busy then?” Thanks for including me in this tour! It is so fun to read everyone’s ‘behind the scenes’ posts!
