Iron Ore Grey Painted Bedroom Makeover ... Step 1 | View From The Fridge

Happy Thursday.  Happy THIRD Thursday of the One Room Challenge.  Half way there (and I better get moving).

I am about to recap our progress on our Master Bedroom Makeover over the past week, but I first want to give a quick recap and catch you up if you’re lost.  The One Room Challenge is hosted by Linda at the blog, Calling it Home.  Basically, over the course of six weeks a bunch of bloggers, work feverishly to makeover ONE space in our home and share the progress each Thursday.  Two weeks ago, I decided (at the very last minute) to jump in on the challenge and makeover our ‘Master’ Bedroom for this season’s challenge (and I say ‘Master’ loosely, as you’ll see).  Last week, I finally came up with a vision and rough plan for the space (see that HERE), and this week I’ve actually made some progress (which I’ll share shortly).  There are lots of pictures in this post … just warning ya!  There just aren’t that many words needed to describe the painting process …

You can see the lovely (and super blah) ‘before’ tour from week one HERE (and from the snapshot below):

Lotsa olive green, huh?  Yep, we’re done with the oliveness of the space, and have officially eliminated it from the walls over the past week (new rug still to come ….):

I mentioned last week, that we were going to go bold … and DARK on the walls in here.  We choose the Pottery Barn color Iron Ore from Sherwin Williams, and I’m in love:

It’s such a change from all the white paint we’ve been putting all over the walls downstairs, but it’s perfect for our bedroom!

It also helps that we have two large windows (one South facing with lots of light all day), and are about to add a ‘wall’ of white curtains to cover our makeshift closet.  All the light and other white aspects should keep it from feeling like too much of a cave (I hope).

You may have noticed Ms. Molly has made herself comfortable:

Bed Hog #1

I’m pretty sure she thinks our bed is actually hers, and each night she allows us to sleep next to her.  That’s sweet of her, huh?  Can. Not. Wait. for a king size bed!!

Another thing that I’m excited about?  Those new curtain tie backs in the picture above.  Drumroll, please … here’s a close up:

Okay, okay.  I realize they may not be exciting to anyone but me, but I love the heavy, oil rubbed bronze simple look of these.  Pretty sure Matt doesn’t even notice that I switched them (or anyone else …).

In other exciting news, I also installed another closet rail for my clothes in our makeshift closet-wall (which is soon to be covered by a wall of curtains).  It took an embarrassing long time to put up, however.  Like half a nap time (which is waaaay more than it should have).

More Iron Ore love …

I also attempted to paint and then ‘weather’ our round silver mirror.  Not entirely sure I love how it turned out.

You’ll also notice the hanging light fixture … yep, stay turned.

I’m also planning a picture gallery wall for this wall:

I also did some sewing this past week.  I found some awesome (and ugly) down pillows on clearance at Home Goods.  All they needed were new covers (easy to make with THIS TUTORIAL, less the Pom Poms).

We’re also planning on some bedside lighting, here’s a sneak peak:

Some accessories …

And now we just need a bed, mattress, rug, and dresser.  You know, the small things.  Aye.

Here’s the updated checklist from last week:

Master Bedroom Makeover – To Do List:

  1. Paint the olive green walls Iron Ore
  2. Create accent wall with reclaimed wood (so, so excited for this feature!!!)
  3. Create a ‘closet wall’ with curtains and more closet organization.
  4. Replace ‘boob’ light in bedroom entryway
  5. New King Size Bed
  6. New King Size Mattress
  7. New Bedding – ordered!!!!
  8. New taller/skinnier dresser
  9. New Rug
  10. New nightstands (or DIY)
  11. Bench or ottomans for under window for some seating
  12. Bedside lightingwe have!!
  13. Accessories:  finials, curtain tie backs, wall of picture frames
  14. Find a place for a full length mirror
  15. Find a way to disguise our wall air conditioning unit (you can see it in the pictures above) … hmmmm.  No ideas on that yet.

I’m loving the dark walls! It’s such a dramatic difference, although the olive was pretty too. I totally get when you’re over the color of a room and all you think about is changing it though. I’m excited to see the “wall” of curtains for the closet. My daughter has an open closet and I’ve considered curtains so I’m looking for some good inspiration. Good luck!

Hey Katie – It’s looking good. I LOVE the bold color choice. I prefer bold colors over the light ones. I’m new in the challenge to so I’m really encouraged to read how far you’ve come in three weeks!

I too decided at the last minute to participate in the ORC, so I’m playing catch-up like you. The good news is that neither of us have major construction to do … mostly just the pretty stuff. Although your accent wall will be some work!

The dark paint looks great. I love my chocolate brown bedroom walls. They create coziness.

I love the dark walls with the white curtains! They look fantastic. Closets are a nightmare to put together so half a nap time doesn’t sound too bad:)

WOW! LOVE the new colour Katie! It’s amazing how bright it still looks in there – wishing we had windows like that!!! Can’t wait to see what you’re up to with that light!

    Wow! Looks lovely!

Even though you have dark walls, the room actually looks quite bright – great choice of lighting!
