Shared Boys’ Room Makeover … {ORC Reveal}

November 5, 2014
LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to be writing this and officially be DONE with Owen and Charlie’s Shared Big Boy Room!

DONE!!

Again, you heard me right, I said DONE.  Something that is rarely said around here these days.

DONE!!

Okay … sorry to be annoying.  It’s just kinda nice to feel like something is actually finished around here.

If you’ve been following along with us for the past six weeks, I joined up with a bunch of fellow bloggers to take part of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda at Calling It Home.

ORC-LP-250x183

We have been slowly working on this room off and on for the better part of a year.  This challenge was just the motivation we needed to kick things into gear to complete the room!

Now … this post has about 100 pictures.  Seriously … I’m not joking.  I think I took about 400 pictures of this room and weeded out the best to show you today.  I’ve learned I’m not exactly a professional photographer when it comes to taking shots of entire rooms.  The ones in magazines look so perfect … apparently, it’s not that easy to shoot a room.

Anyway … I’ll give you a quick recap of the past six weeks, then show you my many, many pictures of the DONE room (see that word, again??), and then at the very end I’ll do my best to give you the ‘source list’ of all the furnishings.

So here we go …

>>  STARTING POINT <<

Here’s what we were starting with (Owen’s room … prior to any work, prior to gaining a roommate):

BEFORE

BEFORE

I actually don’t ever remember it looking this clean.  The carpet was definitely NOT clean if you look close.

The other side of the room … and the weird open closet/nook thing:

BEFORE

and those hilarious looking curtains, shabby trim, and very ‘baby’ looking:

>>  PAST SIX WEEKS RECAP  <<

Here’s the summary (the cliff notes version) of the last 5 posts about the room …

Week One:  I shared the mood board and basic plan for the room:

INSPIRATION FOR THE ROOM

Week Two:  Lots of destruction.  Lots.  Carpet gone.  Old trim gone.  And discovery of some (less than perfect) wood floors underneath!

DESTRUCTION

Week 3: New trim, lots of white paint, and an accent wall:

Week 4:  I shared our tutorial on how we Whitewashed the wood floors:

Week 5:  I mentioned some of the fun furnishings we purchased and made for the room and gave you a sneak peak of a couple items (including the bedding … and Molly in it):

And now, what you came here for today … the onslaught of pictures and the official ‘Reveal’ ..

>>  THE REVEAL  <<

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

Let’s start as if I was actually giving you this tour in person …

In case we forget who sleeps here … we’ve carefully labeled the door (actually, it does help for new baby sitters … one sitters that are confused by all of our rearranging all the time) …

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

WELCOME

The O and C were originally on separate doors.  They’re zinc letters from Anthropologie (thanks, Mom!).  Since I didn’t have a matching ‘&’ now that they’re on the same door, I spray painted a kraft letter from Michael’s to match (well, sort of).

Also, the door is not yellow … the lighting in the hallway just makes it look that way, apparently.  I know you were wondering.

As you walk through the door, we put up a motorcycle print (for Owen … who is obsessed with motorcycles), and some dog tail hooks to hand their crap stuff.

Here’s a closer look:

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

As you walk into the room, you’ll see ‘Charlie’s side of the room’ first.  He’s still in a crib (though he can happily and easily jump in and out of it as his pleasure).  The accent wall is to the right, window to the left, and Owen’s ‘Big-Boy’ bed around the corner to the left (you can’t see it here … keep scrolling).

More of ‘Charlie’s Side’:

Do you recognize that ‘YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE’ Anthro Knock off Pillow?  See all the details on that DIY HERE.  I also made that canvas print above the crib … tutorial coming sometime soon (it was supposed to be a Pottery Barn knock off, though it really looks nothing like the PB version).

We added some mini-shelves to each side of the window mostly for my sake … so I can display their cute stuff and cute faces:

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

Speaking of cute faces …

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

OWEN & CHARLIE … they do love each other from time to time!!!

We just got those pictures taken a couple weeks ago from our friend Shinano of Some Sort Of Escapade (we love her!!).  That gold elephant was carved by my Grandpa and when my Dad passed away last year, we inherited him.  I spray painted him gold for fun!

Now for Owen’s side of the room …

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

His big boy bed fits just about perfectly in the ‘nook’ where the weird closet thing used to be!

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

He also has a couple shelves with some cuteness displayed …

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

I have an obsession with stuffed animals … always have, and I’m pretty sure I’ve passed that down to my boys.  On a normal day, both Owen’s bed and Charlie’s crib are filled with a million stuffed animals … filled!!  A cleared them out for your sake (and mine) today.

And another adorable picture of the two of them:

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

Brothers and Best Friends??

We’re not purposely leaving Ben out of these pictures, I promise.  He’s got his own room {for now}, so we’ll put his cute face all over it (if we ever actually finish his nursery).

And now, my favorite part of the room … the accent wall and dresser:

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

and another shot …

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

and a close up …

An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

Okay … after taking all those pictures of the clean room, I released the hounds (a.k.a. Owen and Charlie), and let them back into their room:

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

Here come the toys …

We’re not huge fans of socks in this family … FYI (which is weird because I hate feet … hate ’em).

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

CHARLIE SHOWING YOU HIS CRIB (and how easily he jumps in and out)

Charlie might need to graduate to a ‘big boy bed’ soon, as he hops on Owen’s at first chance:

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

Do you notice that every book he chooses is Thomas.  He’s obsessed.  OBSESSED.

Owen loves his bed, too (and finally decided to cooperate with me and my picture taking):

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

What are you reading Owen? #fakesmile … “can I go now, Mom?!?”

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

and more feet … ish.

And, because we worked so hard on that floor that you can barely see … I’ll leave you with a shot ‘highlighting’ it (as much as possible):

LOVE THIS!! An awesome Shared Boys' Bedroom Makeover from View From The Fridge

A floor ‘shot’ for my sake (and all our hard work)

Well … what do you think?!?

Let’s review (just a couple more pictures, I promise) …

Wow – You did a wonderful job. I love how everything looks so crisp and modern, but totally kid friendly. There are so many nice touches and thanks for the detailed entry. It’s so fun to see the before and after, especially when someone else does all the work. Job well done! You should be proud and very happy. It’s so nice to finally have it finished, I’m sure. Thumbs up!

Wow! Love this room! I am wondering what you do with their clothes and things since the closet has been removed for the bed…Thanks!!

      • Reply Katie May 7, 2015 at 7:31 am

Good question :) We actually have a small closet on one side of the room (in the pictures … just below the bunting). That’s where we keep all the hanging up clothes and the folded ones are all in the dresser and in the under bed storage. Luckily … I have two little boys who don’t require too many clothes on hangers! Thanks for the question and for stopping by!

Oh Katie, the room is even better than I imagined. I knew the big stuff like the floor and wall were amazing, but your accessories are just as killer. I’m especially in love with all the wall art and pillows! So good!

Thanks, Corey!! We tried a theme once in our middle son’s nursery and it was a complete failure. Just aweful … like an American flag threw up in there. Much happier with how this room turned out sans a theme. Thanks for stopping by and for your sweet comment!! Hope you’re having a great week!

Katie, I absolutely ADORE your boy’s updated bedroom! It’s been such a pleasure following you and participating in ORC together! If I had boys they would LOVE this room! We have similar tastes, despite the fact that I have girls, my daughter Sofia’s bed is a day bed right now too and Charlotte (20 months) is still in a crib. That rug looks similar to the one we have in our family room & I love it! Most of all your two precious boys seem so happy in their new room! BRAVO!

    • Reply Katie November 6, 2014 at 3:49 pm

OH, funny! Charlie is 2 1/2, so I figure his big boy bed is coming shortly I think. I am so excited to check out your space!! Was hoping to do some browsing at naptime, but that’s not going very well in this household today. Might have to wait until bedtime. :) Such a fun challenge, and also SO glad it’s over!! :)

Girl – you rocked this room. Seriously! I love it ALL. And I basically want to steal that light. I know SO much work went into this, and it was worth it. It’s perfectly wonderful. Nicely done.

This looks great! I love the ambitious patterned wall with the simple white furniture. I’ve been wondering how to use white furniture in a boy’s room! Great blog too!

Wow Katie! You really did an awesome job on the boys room! I don’t know a little boy that wouldn’t love to have a room like that!

First, sorry I’m just now getting over here! I hit publish on my room and ran out the door on vacation. Secondly…Katie, this room is fabulous!! I love every single piece and you can see how much hard work and heart you put into this room! The floor, the lighting, all of the artwork, that chevron wall…gorgeous! I love the bed in the nook with the books displayed! Well done!!!

Thanks, Ginger! We worked hard on this space, and I think it’s one of the only spaces in our home that actually feels ‘done’. At least for now. :)

Katie, The room looks fantastic. It’s amazing what you can do when you set a goal with a specific timeline! This should be a room that they will enjoy for years to come. Where did you get the custom “Owen” book?

    • Reply Katie July 12, 2015 at 9:03 pm

Hi Laura! It’s not actually an ‘Owen’ book … it’s a customized canvas that I received for a gift from my sister-in-law, but I believe she bought it from Zulily. Thanks for stopping by and for the note!

      • Reply Laura Crowley July 14, 2015 at 6:32 pm

Oh, that’s great. It’s really cute! It fits well with the style of the rest of the room.

The room looks amazing and has given me so much inspiration for the shared room I’m prepping : )
Does the day bed fit a standard twin mattress? I’m having trouble finding that info on the IKEA website. Thanks!

      Thank you, Serena!!

Did you put a standard twin mattress on the frame? The dimensions seem off by an inch or two… I’m hoping a standard twin would fit…

        • Reply Katie October 1, 2015 at 8:39 pm

Yes, the ‘big boy’ bed fits a standard twin mattress! Thanks for the question!
