Rustic Industrial Bedroom Makeover Plan {ORC – Week 2}

October 15, 2015

It’s week two of the One Room Challenge, which means that there are only four weeks to finish up our master bedroom makeover.  I’m happy to say I now have a plan for the space.  If I was organized and had planned well for this challenge, I probably would have had this plan done much earlier, and would be able to report actual progress on the space this week.  Well … I’m just not that organized this fall, but I am super excited to get to work.  Oh, and I did paint one small wall yesterday, as well as buy some fancy hangers at Home Goods, so I guess there has been a tiny bit of progress.

Before I reveal our ‘vision’ for the space (that sounds so professional, huh?), I just want to catch anyone up who may be lost.  First of all … the One Week Challenge is hosted by Linda at the blog, Calling it Home.  Basically, over the course of six weeks, a bunch of bloggers (like over 100 of us), work feverishly to makeover one space in our home and share the progress each Thursday.  Last week I mentioned that we’ve decided (with the help of you all and Facebook) to makeover our ‘Master’ Bedroom (note that I say ‘master’ in quotes because it’s far from a luxurious, spacious master suite like you may be thinking … it’s basically a room that fits a bed and not much more).  You can see the lovely (and super blah) ‘before’ tour from last week HERE.

Now that you’re caught up on what’s going on, are you ready for the inspiration for the space??  The grand plan for the space (that I somehow need to transform in the next four weeks)???  Drumroll please …

As you can see (and read), we’re going for the rustic/industrial/modern feel for our bedroom.  Think reclaimed wood and some metal, with an ultra plush rug and soft, relaxing bedding.  Nothing too graphic.  Nothing too bright.  Lots of neutrals with just a couple pops of color.

What do you think??  My {slight} fear is that the space will end up feeling too cold, so I’m going to try to make sure there are plenty of soft touches to balance the industrial feel of the space.  Now, if you have been following my blog for any amount of time, you’ll know I love to paint everything in my house white.  I love white.  If my entire house could just be repainted white (inside and out), I would be happy.  I would have a bunch of white furniture, too, if I didn’t live in a house of four boys and a large dog.  For this space, however … I’m headed to the dark side.  Like super dark, almost black side.  I picked out a Pottery Barn color from Sherwin Williams called Iron Ore (it’s pictured up there in the inspiration board on the bottom right).

I had a couple fabulous little helpers through the process.  Here’s Ben after he ‘helped’ me choose the perfect color (and when I say ‘helped’, I mean he picked up an entire stack of paint chip samples and threw them across the floor, knocked over a stack of painters tape, and then tried to escape behind the counter to help the lady mix the paint up … he’s helpful like that).

My little paint selector ‘helper’

Also, what’s up with his pant leg?

And then while that helper napped, I had another little one help with the actual painting:

We paint shirtless around here.  Ahhhh …. joking!!!

And also … I should move those dresses on the back of the door, huh??

And finally, here’s coat ONE on wall ONE (taken with my iPhone … sorry for the blurriness):

So basically, everything in the before picture that is that olive green color will now be painted dark grey.  Do you think I’m crazy??  Is it going to be way too dark??  Fingers crossed it turns out …

So, here’s the ‘official to-do’ list:

Master Bedroom Makeover – To Do List:

  1. Paint the olive green walls Iron Ore
  2. Create accent wall with reclaimed wood (so, so excited for this feature!!!)
  3. Create a ‘closet wall’ with curtains and more closet organization.
  4. Replace ‘boob’ light in bedroom entryway
  5. New King Size Bed
  6. New King Size Mattress
  7. New Bedding
  8. New taller/skinnier dresser
  9. New Rug
  10. New nightstands (or DIY)
  11. Bench or ottomans for under window for some seating
  12. Bedside lighting
  13. Accessories:  finials, curtain tie backs, wall of picture frames
  14. Find a place for a full length mirror
  15. Find a way to disguise our wall air conditioning unit (you can see it in the pictures above) … hmmmm.  No ideas on that yet.

I better get moving, huh?  That’s a lot to accomplish in four weeks.  Send in the reinforcements (or just a babysitter for a couple days)!!!

I’m hoping to have at least a couple of those items crossed off by next week.  Stay tuned.  And … if you’re interested in checking out the other in-progress room makeovers on this challenge … head over to Calling It Home today to see what everyone else has linked up (and I’m sure they’ve made much more progress than me)!!

Thanks for stopping by today, and if you’re also participating in the challenge … good luck!!

Seems like you have a lot of things to do, Katie. But, I admire your little ones. They’re so cute that they really want to help you in your bedroom makeover. So nice of them. :)

Love love love your ideas! I think you will really enjoy the dark grey. It will make your master a beautiful sanctuary – which is necessary when you are raising boys! My hubby and I have 4 – the youngest turning 19 this month! Whew!
