Rudolph the {THRIFTY} Reindeer

December 12, 2013
Thrifty Rudolph Art ... the AFTER

Okay, excuse the nerdy post title … just couldn’t resist (or think of anything else creative).

Anyway, have you noticed all the crafty things everyone is doing with the stag/deer/reindeer heads from Michaels?? I’ve seen them everywhere, and I love all the fun ideas. Problem is … our Michael’s doesn’t have these. I asked. At two separate stores. Nope. OOL (out of luck). So, I improvised and traced my own off a picture on our iPad (you’ll see). It will satisfy my need for a deer head … for now (at least until Christmas is over).

This project all started with some frames I picked up at Goodwill for $2.99 a piece. Let me start with the after first:

Now for the BEFORE … ready?

One of the frames BEFORE

One of the frames BEFORE

It’s a lovely picture, isn’t it? Actually, it’s dirty, yellowed, and just waiting for a make over! Let’s look at them side by side, mainly for my sake (I like to feel like I’ve accomplished something) …

Thrifty Rudolph Art … Before and After

The steps to making this are pretty simple (and self explanatory), but here they are …

First, remove the backing, glass, and ‘art’, and spray paint the bare frame white. (This was fun in the subzero weather here in MN).

Next, cut the background paper to size …

Using double-sided tape, I stuck the paper to the cardboard backing of the frame (just in case I want to change up the frames after Christmas):

Next, I pulled up a picture of this infamous reindeer/deer head from Michael’s, traced in onto a white sheet of paper and cut it out.

I glued each head onto the background paper, and added a nose (which were really red flower pins I picked up from Joann on sale):

And lastly, added some red and white polka dot ribbon … DONE!

I thought about hanging these on our porch …

Do they work on this wall? Hmmm .....

One more view of Rudolph …

I’m finishing up this red and white room today. Period. I’m throwing in the towel on Christmas decorating after TODAY, so however it ends up will have to do for this year. I’ll hopefully share how it turns out tomorrow.

Happy Decorating (if you’re still working on it like me … )
