Room & Board ‘Little Shirley’ Inspired Vases

March 24, 2014
RBInspiredVases

Happy Monday!  I hope you enjoyed some Spring weather for the first official weekend of Spring.   Our weather … not so Spring-ish, however some new vases and beautiful flowers have me holding out hope that it will arrive soon!

I don’t know about you, but I kind of want my entire house to be furnished by Room and Board.  Well … actually more like a good mix of Anthropologie and Room and Board, but either way … I. LOVE.  ROOM & BOARD.  It’s a bit spendy, however … even at the outlet store near us.  When I was browsing through their catalog the other day, these ‘Little Shirley’ vases caught my eye:

ROOM AND BOARD LITTLE SHIRLEY VASES

I love the fun colors.  I love the shape (you don’t need many flowers to fill them out).  I don’t, however, love that they cost $160 for the 8 piece set!!  And they’re tiny … 3″ round, 4″ tall.

I decided to make my own similar vases.  The R&B vases are made of clay, and I’m no potter.  My solution?  Think 8th grade Science class … Erlenmeyer Flasks!

ERLENMEYER FLASKS

Yes, they’re not the exact same size, and yes, they’re glass not clay, but at $6.99 for the set of three and free 2-day shipping (wer’re Prime members) … they’re much more budget friendly!

I ordered two sets of that ‘variety pack’ above from Amazon ranging in size from 50mL to 250mL.  Six vases (most of which are larger than the R&B vases) for $13.98 vs. eight for $160 at R&B.  Not so bad, ey?

I wasn’t really going for the Science class look, though, so spray paint was in order once these flasks arrived.  I happen to have a large stash of spray paint, so I didn’t have to buy any for this project … fabulous!  I picked out 5 colors, and started painting.  And when I say ‘I’ started painting … I really mean I bribed Matt to paint each of these for me (growing babies and spray painting don’t mix well).

**tip for painting glass … use a very light coat (to prevent drips) and hold paint can slightly above vase … spraying at a downward angle towards the vase.

Add some fresh flowers …

And again … the $160 Room and Board vases:

And my $14 version:

Not quite the same, but for a fraction of the price … I’m just as happy with my thrifty version!

I hope this post brings some Spring cheer to your Monday!

Note:  The Room & Board Little Shirley vases are handspun, handglazed, and artist designed.  Room & Board donates 10% of the profits of these handmade Little Shirley vases to Seattle Area Charities.  That helps rationalize the price just a bit, and if you can afford the R&B version, I’m sure you can feel good about that!
