Painted Burlap Heart Plaque

February 2, 2015
Pink Painted Burlap Heart Plaque | View From The Fridge

I have a thing for painting burlap lately … have you noticed?  I guess I like the texture of it and also how incredibly easy it is!!

Also, I love any excuse to use the color pink in a house of boys.

So … in honor Valentine’s Day and in honor of me being the only female in our house (of the human variety, at least), and because I love EASY, SIMPLE projects … I’m sharing this (almost) 5 minute project with you today:

Pink Painted Burlap Heart Plaque | View From The Fridge

SUPPLIES

Here’s what you’ll need:

Pink Painted Burlap Heart Plaque | View From The Fridge

  • Canvas or wood block painted or stained in your choice of colors (grey chalk paint for mine)
  • Piece of pink burlap just slightly smaller than your canvas.
  • White chalk paint (mine is Americana from Michael’s)
  • Adhesive paper or vinyl (enough to create a heart stencil).  {Not pictured above}
  • Spray adhesive {not pictured above … but it is below}
  • Jute twine {also not pictured because it was a last minute addition … see below}

#MAKEIT

And here’s the process:

Pink Painted Burlap Heart Plaque | View From The Fridge

  1. Cut the piece of burlap just smaller than your painted canvas or wood block and fray the ends just a bit.
  2. Create a heart stencil out of adhesive paper or vinyl and stick onto burlap.
  3. Using white chalk paint, paint over burlap.  I’v found that it works best to use a fairly dry brush to prevent the paint getting too blotchy.  You don’t want a completely opaque coat of paint … some of the pink will show through.
  4. Let your paint dry, then grab your spray adhesive.  Spray the back of your burlap generously making sure that you get the edges covered well.
  5. Place the burlap onto the canvas quickly and position in the center.
  6. Randomly wrap twine around the plaque and secure the end ends in the back.

Now … obviously you could skip the last step.  Owen asked me why the heart looks like it’s in jail.  It does kinda look like it’s in a straightjacket now that he mentions it.  Huh.  I just felt like the plaque needed something and I’m all about adding natural elements into our decor.  Also, I had plenty of twine on hand from this project.  What do you think??

And I just couldn’t resist including a shot of my photobomber (you may recognize this photo from our ‘Real Life Home Tour’ from last week):

What?!? You want to take a picture of this wrapped up heart thing?

She’s so helpful, isn’t she?!?

Sorry to rub it in.  More to come later.

Also, send wine.

    Get OUT..you can paint burlap??? How did I not know this? Your project is so cute! This would make a great teacher’s gift, or I could see a trio of them in different sizes on a mantle, etc. :)

    This is a really fun idea! I love burlap but I don’t do a lot of decorating for Valentine’s Day. This is like the perfect bit of decor without the entire house being taken over with pink and red! Thanks.

      I’m not a huge Valentine’s decorator, either. I decorate one shelf, and that’s about it. Usually, I’m so DONE with Christmas and all the clutter that i like simple things for Valentine’s Day! Thanks for stopping by!

    I don’t normally decorate for Valentine’s Day, but I am in love with burlap right now and this would look so cute sitting on a shelf with a little candle!
