Painted Burlap Christmas Sign

Quick … Favorite Christmas Song … Go!

I have three …

  • For traditional songs, it’s {hands down} Silent Night.    (I also want everyone to sing this at my funeral in 65-70 years even if it’s in June … how’s that for morbid thinking this morning??)
  • Next, is John Lennon’s Happy Christmas (very unoriginal, I know)
  • and finally, because it makes me so happy, Mariah Carey’s “I’ll I Want For Chistmas.”

So, with that in mind, I made a ‘Joy To The World’ sign for our Kitchen this season (???).

I’m part of a fun blog hop today with 9 other bloggers bringing you 10 Festive, Holiday Song Inspired Projects.  They’re all linked up at the end, so be sure to check out some other great ideas!

First, though, let’s get to my ‘Joy To The World’ Plaque:

SUPPLIES

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A wooden ‘plaque’.  They sell these at Michael’s.  I got lucky, and was able to get this one from my Mom who bought it on clearance at Target and removed the artwork on the front.
  • Paint for background color (if desired).  I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Burgundy
  • Piece of burlap slightly smaller than size of plaque.
  • Stick on letters from the scrapbooking aisle of the crafts store.
  • White paint (I used Americana Chalk Paint from Michael’s in White)
  • Upholstery Tacks
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Small White Paint Brush
  • Sandpaper (optional)

PROCESS

And here’s how it’s done:

  1. Paint plaque your background color (Burgundy, in my case) and set aside to dry.
  2. Cut burlap to size and fray edges.DIY Joy To The World Painted Burlap Plaque | View From The Fridge
  3. Place letters in place on burlap.DIY Joy To The World Painted Burlap Plaque | View From The Fridge
  4. Paint over burlap (and letters) with the white paint.  Allow to dry
  5. Peel off letters, and if desired, outline letters by painting around them with a small paintbrush (just makes them stand out more).DIY Joy To The World Painted Burlap Plaque | View From The Fridge
  6. Spray back of burlap with Spray Adhesive and stick onto painted plaque.
  7. Place upholstery tacks all around edges of burlap.DIY Joy To The World Painted Burlap Plaque | View From The Fridge
  8. Sand edges and corners of wooden plaque (if you want a more ‘worn’ look).DIY Joy To The World Painted Burlap Plaque | View From The Fridge
