One Room Challenge: Big Boys’ Room

October 2, 2014
Big Boy Room Transformation; Week2 of the One Room Challenge | View From The Fridge

Over a year ago we found out we had a third little one on the way (who’s now 4 months old already … what!?!?!) and I shared our plans to makeover Owen’s room and make it a shared ‘big boy’ room.

And, as is the norm around here … we’re still working on it.

Turns out we’re not the quickest DIY’ers.  Also, it turns out that not a whole lot gets accomplished with two preschoolers at foot and a newborn who likes to be held ALL. DAY. LONG.

Well … I heard about the One Room Challenge from Linda over at Calling It Home, and figured it was just the motivation we needed to get this room DONE.  FINALLY.

The whole goal of this One Room Challenge is to finish the room in 6 weeks!  Since we’ve had over 52 weeks to work on this so far and we’re still not done, 6 weeks to finish just may prove challenging!

But I’m on a mission, my friends!

And to help with some motivation, there are nearly 100 other bloggers already linked up and excited to take on this same 6 week One Room Challenge.  Check out all the week 1 posts over at Calling It Home Now.

Okay … let’s recap the status of this room:

Here’s the before:

It actually doesn’t look too bad in that picture above, but we want to update it a bit and make it a little less ‘baby’.  We’ll get our ‘baby’ fix in the nursery (that we’re also still working on … and he’s been here for 4 months!!).

That light fixture … has got to go.

The carpet, though not so bad looking in this picture … has got to go.  It’s stained.  It is usually full of dirt.

The wall color is drab …

The trim needs to be replaced.

Here’s another shot of the room (the other side) with some additional things we’d like to do:

That weird open closet/nook/wall combo is not ideal for storage, and if we’re going to fit TWO boys in here will need to go to make room for a bed.

I made those curtains:

#1 before I knew how to sew (don’t look too close)

#2 to fit the windows in our old place, and therefore are the wrong size entirely

#3 were made for a little BABY boy (and we’re going for a BIG boy look now)

Now … looking forward, here’s the inspiration board I shared (a YEAR ago):

We’re thinking lots of white and grey for the walls and floors and big furniture pieces and then pops of navy and orange around the room.

We have painted the herringbone accent wall already, so that is one less project to complete in the next 6 weeks.  Check it out:

Herringbone Accent Wall

So … join me over the next 5 Thursdays as we work to complete this room.  Finally.  Can I get a Woot Woot!! (actually … hold off on that for 5 weeks and see if we get ‘er done).

New Floors …

Big boy beds …

New rug, curtains, light fixtures, bedding …

WHITE walls (!!!) …

Out with the closet/nook/wall combo …

If you stopped by from the One Room Challenge Link Up … Welcome!  Excited for you to follow along with us as we finish this up.  In the meantime, check out some of other projects HERE.

Happy Friday, and as always, thanks for stopping by!

:) I can relate to your procrastination – I planned to redo my laundry for about a year but nothing was done until I signed up for the ORC in April – and now it’s done and I love, love it!
I love your style! The room will be beautiful! I’m off to get started on my basement bedroom makeover! See you next week!

Ha! I’m glad I’m not alone, Shelia! Apparently, I’m not very self motivated. I needed this challenge to finally finish things off in there! Excited top see what you do with your basement bedroom! See ya next week … Cheers!

I love this idea, we have a few rooms around here that need work. I love the ideas and vision you have for the now “big boy” room. Good luck as you transform your space.

I must say you have great taste! I chose a similar color scheme for my son’s room but I bet our interpretations are totally different which makes it so fun. Definitely going to get look at the other participants and get some inspiration going.

You can do it! I’m not the quickest at DIYing a room either, but when you’re motivated, you can do anything. The plans sound great. I can’t wait to see the final result.

I can’t wait to see how this comes to life Katie! Orange and navy is one of my all time favorite color combos for little boys! You’ve inspired me for a change in my son’s room :) Can’t wait to follow along!

  • Reply sarah sofia knepp October 7, 2014 at 5:22 pm

You had me with your mood board and big boy room! Doing ORC again, this time making my daughter Sofia’s room into a more big girl room! I’m in the same boat, it looks good, but not appropriate for their age. I stopped updating when baby number 2 came around, now she’s almost 20 months, and we’ve been in our current house for 21 months. Thus, don’t feel bad, it takes time! I can’t wait to see what you do, especially I already love the design you have in place! Good luck!

The inspiration board is just as perfect now as it was when you shared it last year. I just love the navy & orange color scheme and it seems like it will grow with the boys. Can’t wait to watch your progress!
