Master Bedroom Makeover – The Before

October 7, 2015

I don’t know what I’m getting myself into here.  On a very-last-minute whim, I’ve decided to join the 2015 One Room Challenge – Fall Edition!  And when I say very-last-minute, I mean it.  I didn’t even know which room I was going to tackle at this time yesterday.  I posted on Facebook yesterday afternoon looking for some advice, and it appeared that everyone thought we should give the master bedroom a go.  So here I am.    Without a formal plan for the space (but with plenty of ideas in my head).  Jumping in with two feet to this always fun and inspiring challenge!

Before we get into the {pitiful} before tour, let me step back for a minute.  If you have no clue what I speak of when I say ‘One Room Challenge’, I’ll elaborate.  Basically, it’s a 6 week challenge put on by Linda at Calling It Home.  The mission:  Makeover ONE ROOM in your house over 6 weeks.  But here’s the thing, it’s 6 weeks of posts, but if you do the math, I need to have my ‘reveal’ done 5 weeks from TODAY.  See … what did I just get myself into?!?  Progress around our house these days moves at snails pace with three little boys at foot!  I have actually completed this challenge twice before.  You can see Owen & Charlie’s Big Boy Room Makeover HERE, and our Modern Entryway Makeover from this past spring HERE.

ORC Guest Gold

We will start the ‘before’ tour momentarily, but first I must preface this with telling you that this space is sort of pitiful.  We haven’t done anything with the space since we moved in, except fill it with a whole bunch of cheap furniture … some of which has even followed us from our college days.  Here we go, don’t judge …

Upon walking through the door, you’ll find:

Lots of olive green and white … and that’s about the extent of the color palette.  It’s a very small ‘master’ bedroom.  This part of our home is over 150 years old, and back in the day there were no master bedroom ‘suites’ complete with a ‘sitting area’, a luxurious bathroom, and a perfectly organized walk-in closet.  Nope … that’s far from what we’ve got to work with here.  The closet situation is tiny.  TINY.  The official closet is that space to the right in the picture above (you’ll see it in a couple pictures below).  It does have a door, and I can officially ‘walk’ into it, but only about one step.  Since that space was just not enough for both of us, we’ve decided to turn an entire wall into our ‘closet’ space.  However, this is as far as we’ve gotten:

The future ‘closet’ space …

We need to figure out an attractive way to hide the closet … curtains? sliding panels? Whatever we do is going to make the room feel even smaller, but having a functioning closet is more important to us than extra walking space!

And let’s talk about those chairs.  They were moved up here about two years ago when we were having a party (just to get them out of the way downstairs), and have remained ever since.  Their only purpose currently is collecting laundry … both clean and dirty.  They’ve gotta go back to their original intended home in the office!

Now let’s talk beds, mattresses, and bedding:

Our bed is just lovely, right.  I know that’s what you were thinking.  There are a couple problems in this area.  #1.  Is that we have a queen bed.  Our 60 pound dog sleeps with us every night, and lately, Owen and Charlie have both been joining the party in our bed in the middle of the night.  2 adults, 2 kids, and a giant dog in a queen bed isn’t great for sleep quality.  And, yes, we’re also working on how to keep O and C in their own beds and room … suggestions welcome!!  Problem #2.  Our mattress is ancient.  I’m embarrassed to tell you how old it is, but it’s beyond time for a new one!  Problem #3.  Our bedding is old, worn, and the mattress pad and fitted sheet have lost most of their elastic (and thus the corners keep slipping off … super annoying!!).

The white ‘nightstands’ don’t offer much storage, and thus always look cluttered to me, and you could say I have a cord problem on my side of the bed.  Also … our walls have always been naked:

On a promising(??) note … The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up is at my bedside.  I can’t wait for my life to change … if I ever get to reading it!!

Okay … here’s a couple views from the far side of the room:

That door that you see there is my ‘walk-in’ closet (that you can barely take ONE step into).  And we’ve had this random navy and red hamper in our room ever since starting to redo Ben’s Nursery.  It has got to go, or at least be hidden … the patriotic look is just not what I envision for this space.

And finally, here’s a look at the other corner:

Very stylish, aye?!?

And … since I just decided late yesterday to jump into this challenge, I don’t have a formal plan laid out just yet.  Look for that to come next week … vision board and all, but for now here are a few items on the to-do list:

  1. Purchase King bed, mattress, and new bedding.
  2. New nightstands or some sort of bedside storage and lighting.
  3. Enclose ‘closet wall’ and finish installing organization.
  4. Paint!!!!!
  5. New Rug
  6. Add some personal touches … pictures, artwork, accessories!  No more bare walls!!
  7. Lighting and better organization in the existing ‘walk in’ closet.
  8. And I would love to figure out where a full length mirror could fit!

I’d love a modern-rustic feel to our bedroom.  Lots of black, white, wood, and texture with a couple pops of color.

Thanks for stopping by today!  This is by far the most unprepared I’ve ever been for one of these challenges.  If you’re interested in more One Room Challenge makeover ‘befores’, you can check out the 20 official designers taking part in the challenge HERE, and all the other bloggers linking up for this challenge (like me) HERE.  Huge thanks to Linda from Calling It Home for once again organizing this challenge!!  And if you’re also participating … best of luck!!

I love all of the windows in your bedroom. It will be a beautiful transformation I am sure! I am also taking part in the challenge, this is my first time. I am not sure what I got myself into but I know that I am eager to get to work on my boys bedroom. They are in need of their own big boy bedroom and I need some organization in their room. I am excited to follow along and see the transformation. We have a lot of work to do!

I love that you just jumped in without a plan really but knowing what you want! That’s half the battle, at least for me! I’m excited to see what you do with this room. Good luck with keeping kids out of your bed, our 6 year old still comes in occasionally but thankfully the 14 year old hasn’t for years. Lol.

Can’t wait to see how this space turns out in the end! I debated between our master bedroom and the den when I decided to link up to the ORC, but ultimately the den won. I’d really like our kids to have a place to hang their stockings at Christmas and right now our fireplace is MIA so the den got priority. Master BR is on the list though so I’m excited for some great inspiration!
