Gold Pencil Holder {Anthro Knock Off #4}

Posted by on April 30, 2014 in Organization | 43 comments

Well … it’s been quite the week so far!  I’m simply AMAZED at what projects Brittany, Angela, Sonnet, and Tasha have come up with.  If you’re wondering … we didn’t know for sure what everyone else was doing for this challenge.  So it’s been just as exciting for us to check out each other projects each day as it is for you (at least I hope so!).

So … again, welcome to Anthro Knock Off Week … DAY 4!

Anthropologie Knock-off Week - 5 Blogs, 7 Days, 30 Posts

Today, I’m sharing my easiest project … BY FAR!  DIY Gold Pencil Holder / Desk Organizer.

Check it out …

You could probably make this for FREE with crap stuff laying around your house right now!  Here’s how it started:

DESK ORGANIZER … BEFORE

I hunted around the house for random cylinder containers, and came up with a shot glass and fancy tea canister.  I supplemented these with two Goodwill purchases (yes, I bought that random crap that you wonder who will buy), and one Michael’s purchase (that small, round, cardboard container).

I also found a spare board we had laying in our scrap pile, had Matt cut it to size, and sanded it on all sides and edges.

Once I had the placement how I wanted it on the board, I glued the pieces down with Liquid Nails and let dry … for 24 hours.

USE LIQUID NAILS TO GLUE DOWN CYLINDERS

Once dry, I painted with several coats of Gold Spray Paint (I had to do 3 coats to completely cover wood grain on the board).

THAT’S IT!!  Easy, right?!?

Fill ‘er up …

Before I started, I was slightly concerned that the organizer wouldn’t be heavy enough to keep from tipping over (Anthro’s version is made from metal … and therefore probably much heavier).  I’m happy to report, even with my 4 scissors in there, it isn’t tippy!

Success!

And for comparison … one more time:

  19. Thanks for the inspiration! I took your idea and modified it to make a Mother’s Day gift for my grandmother who keeps a lot of stuff on her kitchen table. When family comes over she wants to feed them but there’s too much stuff on the table. I used a Dollar store tray with handles, 3 small round baskets and a desk organizer, crazy glue and silver spray paint.

    • Awesome, Stephanie! I’m so glad my little desk organizer served as some inspiration for you! Have a great rest of the weekend, and thanks so much for the nice note!

  23. I had a giggle at the “crap at Goodwill you wonder who would buy” because I ALWAYS wonder what ever happens to some of those empty containers.

This is super cute, btw. I might have to go be one of “those” people too.

    • Ha! Thanks, Andrea! I know … I can’t believe I was one of those ‘people’ buying the ‘crap’.
