It’s mid-October, and that means you still have a couple weeks to find that perfect costume. That could be plenty of time for you. However, if you’re like me, you’ll wait until the very last minute and go into panic mode.
Well … If you also always seem to be behind the game (or maybe I’m just a chronic procrastinator?!?), I’ve got a fun idea for you: A DIY Piñata Costume!
Okay … my modeling skills could use some work, but you get the picture. Best part about this costume? You probably have most of the things needed on hand already.
- Paper streamers in a variety of colors.
- Old, zip-up sweatshirt (preferably in a bright color)
- Fabric glue
- Sewing machine (I love my Brother, but I’m no expert)
- Cardstock and adhesive stickers for sign (not shown)
- Party hat of any color
And here’s how to create the costume:
You’ll first want to ‘ruffle’’ a bunch of the paper streamers with your sewing machine. To do this quickly, you’ll need to change two settings on your machine. First, set the tension on your machine to HIGH. Secondly, set the stitch width to the largest it can go. Then, just sew a straight line down the center of your streamers, and they should ruffle instantly.
Watch the ruffles form once your machine is set to these settings:
Make enough ruffles in alternating colors to cover your sweatshirt and hat (and your pants if you’re really excited about his …). Once you have all your ruffles made, you’ll want to either glue these to your sweatshirt (which is what I did), or sew them on.
Next, simply glue some ruffles around your hat.
Last step is to create the ‘Happy Birthday’ sign. You could do this in a variety of ways … print out a sign, cut out a circle and use a marker to write ‘Happy Birthday, OR do what I did, and use stick on letters. Super easy.
Pin on your sign, place your hat on your head, and zip up that sweatshirt!
Let’s just no one takes a swing at you!
Now … do spill what your plans for Halloween are. I had visions of us all doing a ‘family’ Halloween costume this year. When Owen informed me he was going to be Spiderman, I thought … “hmmm … we’ll do a family of Superheroes theme”. You know … Spiderman, Batman, Superman, maybe Wonder Woman and Wolverine(?). Well, Charlie informed me that he was being “Thomas” (as in Thomas The Train), and there was no changing his mind. Spiderman and Thomas. Not exactly the family themed costumes I was hoping for!
Oh well …
I guess I’ll be a Piñata.
Thanks for stopping by!
