Dirty Little Secret Friday {Office Desk Drawers}

January 31, 2014
DESK DRAWER ORGANIZATION | VIEW FROM THE FRIDGE

And the organizing continues! Week 5 takes us back to the office, this time on a bit smaller scale. The craft closet re-do that I kicked off this series with in the beginning of the month was quite the undertaking. This week’s project took an hour. Maybe an hour and a half. The results, however, still make me smile!

WEEK 5 OF ‘DIRTY LITTLE SECRET FRIDAY’ CONTINUES …

Project Organize

Let me give you a bit of background before we begin. Our office update started towards the end of last year, and we are {very slowly} making progress. Here are a couple before pictures of the office:

And the other side … the wall area where the desk now resides:

Lots of wood paneling, dingy white paint, and an outdated cabinet stuck on the wall (in an odd spot).

Here is the latest view of that same wall pictured above:

Office PROGRESS

Much better, right? No more yellow-y wood, MUCH brighter, a new chair, but it still has quite a ways to go. For example (on this side of the room alone) …

Office To Do

What, you don’t like the Pampers box overflowing with kid’s craft stuff?? I was thinking it added a nice touch. But yes, we are moving in the right direction {very slowly}, but we still have a lot to do (as shown above). So what did I do this week?

THIS WEEK’S PROJECT

Yep, the resolution was to organize one thing a week. Small ‘areas’ included, and my drawer situation was driving. me. crazy. So, that’s what I’ve got for this week!

Now, for the before shots:

The drawers before

And a closer look …

They could use some organization, agree? Well, here’s MY 5 step process …

STEP 1: REMOVE DRAWERS:

eek

STEP 2: EMPTY DRAWERS, EXAMINE CONTENTS, AND SORT

Office Organization | View From The Fridge

Contents of drawers

As for the sorting, here’s what I discovered (and the questions I asked myself):

  1. I have a whole lot of pens that don’t work.
  2. Why do I have 6 opened scotch tape rolls ANd 3 open packing tape rolls?
  3. Why am I keeping my snap setter and heart punch that are clearly broken and unrepairable??
  4. I don’t need an actual calculator in arm’s reach … my phone has one that will do the trick just fine (and that’s always within reach) Also, I don’t think this calculator has had working batteries since college. Or maybe high school.
  5. Why am I keeping my college ID from freshman year in my desk drawer?? Do I really think I can still use this for those college student discounts?!?!
Office Organization | View From The Fridge

because you should always keep your ID from 10+ years ago with reach at all times … (okay, it was almost 15 years ago)

STEP 3: CLEAN OUT DRAWERS AND LINE WITH SHELF PAPER (because it makes it oh-so-much-perdy-ier)

Office Organization | View From The Fridge

Shelf papered drawers

That pattern might be a bit busy, but I happened to have it on hand, and it’s better than the white textured bottom which acted like a glitter magnet and held tightly to stains.

STEP 4: LABEL, LABEL, LABEL

Desk Drawer Organization | View From The Fridge

Double Labeled Organizer!! No more excuses!!

I used my existing drawer organizer (from Ikea), cleaned it out, and labeled the compartments … twice. I labeled the bottoms with these fun sparkly pink letters, and then labeled the tops with white adhesive shelf paper and a copper sharpie marker (did you know such thing existed??? ). This way, I can tell where something goes when the compartment is empty AND when it already has stuff in it! NO EXCUSES, HERE!

More labels …

More labels

Target had these fun tiny metal square organizers in the dollar spot this past week. I bought 6 … and they’re perfect for organizing all this small drawer stuff.

STEP 5: FILL DRAWERS, AND PUT BACK INTO DESK:

Stick drawers back in place!

Drawers back into desk …

And there you have it! My organizing task for the week … complete. Check out the before and after shots:

You’re not alone, I still have my college id in an old wallet somewhere. Not like I’m going to be able to use a card that is 12 years old.

Looks great. It’s amazing how quickly drawers can go from “tidy and organised” to “everything bunged in on top”. You had clearly done some organisation before in those lovely ikea drawer dividers, I agree that periodically taking everything out and really looking at it to see if it’s still needed is the only way to keep them nice. Do you find you have a peek inside your lovely tidy drawers every time you go in the office now? I know I would!
I love your college id, thank you so much for sharing it with us!

It looks a million times better – especially getting rid of the yellow-ish walls. Do you ever miss having your sewing table under the window. I moved mine to a spot that isn’t under the window – and I miss it like crazy. I had to put an extra big lamp there to light up the space.
