Dirty Little Secret Friday … File Cabinet Organization

February 21, 2014

Happy Friday!!  The weekend is {almost} here!  To celebrate, mother nature dumped another 8″ of snow on us.  FABULOUS!  Spring can arrive any day … I’m more than ready!  In case you missed this on Facebook earlier this week, here’s what it looked like out our patio door on Monday.  Add another almost foot to those snow piles, and that’s what it looks like this morning.  Ugh.  Molly has to climb a mountain just to go out to the bathroom (and she’s not the most well acclimated cold weather dog).

That's our patio table that Matt is standing on as he rakes snow off the roof!!

But … back to the topic of the day, ORGANIZING.

This week I worked on getting our file cabinet in order.  Take a look:

We’ve been trying hard over the past year or so to minimize the amount of actual paper we keep.  We have a scanner, and have been trying to scan and  e-file a lot of the important papers.  We also have tried hard to opt for the ‘paperless’ option wherever possible (bank, credit card statements, church newsletter, etc).  Those changes have now freed up quite a bit of room, and have now allowed me to keep a lot of crafting supplies in our file cabinet … which is fabulous, as I seem to keep accumulating them!

Here’s a quick summary of ‘issues’ with the previous state of the file cabinet:

  1. Mismatched folders that had different size labels.
  2. No labels or label holders left to add / modify existing folders.
  3. Labels that you couldn’t see.
  4. Worn and falling apart folders.
  5. A lot of old stuff (paperwork) that can now be recycled.

And, here’s how I cleaned it up …

  1. First … emptied entire cabinet and recycled old file folders (kept a few of the nicer ones to send to Goodwill).

  2. Sorted all paperwork into new piles that seemed to make sense.  At the same time, throwing away all old or unnecessary items.
  3. Once everything was into new piles … determined how many folders would be needed AND what the labels should say.
  4. Purchased new file folders in two colors with consistent label placement and size.
  5. Purchased printable blank labels.
  6. Downloaded Avery label template and printed out each label.

  7. Labeled all folders and sorted in alternating colors.

  8. Put the labeled folders back into cabinet, and filled ’em up with paperwork and crafts!File Cabinet Organization | View From The Fridge

And, in case you’re thinking … “where did Katie get that lovely blue and turquoise file cabinet?” (because you’re obviously thinking that …), I posted that transformation here.
