Dirty Little Secret Friday … {All In One Jewelry Organizer}

January 24, 2014

My jewelry situation was awful.  So bad that I even forgot to take before pictures for this project {sorry about that}.  Picture random boxes of tangled bracelets, necklaces, and earrings.  I pretty much stopped wearing jewelry on a regular basis because every time I wanted a dangly earring, five necklaces and two bracelets came out of the box with the earring, all hopelessly tangled up.  Yep, that was enough for me.  Back in the box they went … and remained … until NOW!

Week four of this series ‘Dirty Little Secret Friday’, and I’m still keeping resolution #8 (though the others aren’t looking as good).

Project Organize

The vision for this project has been floating around in my head for a long time!!  I have seen so many awesome jewelry organizers on Pinterest, but I was being picky.  I wanted one ‘unit’ that held ALL my jewelry.  Not just earrings (there are some lovely chicken wire earring holders out there).  Not just hooks for necklaces.  Not one of those hands that just holds rings.  I wanted ONE that held ALL my jewelry;  necklaces, dangly earrings, stud earrings, rings, pins (I own one …), and bracelets.  That made my planning a bit more challenging, but here’s what I came up with (drumroll, please …):

ONE frame … ALL my jewelry!! Hooray!

Let’s break this down (humor me here …):

A spot for necklaces?  Check –

How about those dangly earrings?  Yep …

And those rings and studs?  Yes, sir!

And finally … my bracelets have a home (with plenty of room for more … hint, hint, Matt):

Also, 1985 called and wanted those plastic white hoops back.

So … while the creation of this jewelry organizer look a long time in my head, the actual making of it wasn’t so bad.  You know you want one … here’s the run down:

  1. Frame.  Mine came from Goodwill for $4.99.  I removed everything but the wood and the hanging wire.  If yours has a nice backing (i.e. NOT cardboard), then save that.
  2. 3/8″ particle board cut to exact size of frame.  This will now be your backing if yours was cardboard like mine.  I got my piece of backing at Lowe’s for like $3 and had Matt cut it to size.
  3. 7/8″cup hooks
  4. 1″ foam cut to just smaller than the backing (so it fits into frame).  ~1/8″ gap all around (therefore 1/4″ shorter in each direction than your backing.
  5. Copper wire.  I used 16 gauge wire.  This was easy to work with and cut using a scissors.
  6. Fabric to cover foam and backing.  Mine was some clearance Home Dec fabric from JoAnn.
  7. Knobs for hanging necklaces.  I used two packages of these Faglavik’s from Ikea.  $4.99 each.
  8. Dowel rod … mine was 3/8″ from Michael’s.  I probably could have gone a bit thicker, but this should hold just fine (unless I get some major bling bling for Valentine’s Day).
  9. Larger cup hooks that will allow dowel rod to easily slide in and out.  The 7/8″ cup hooks above were just a bit too small.  I ended up using the ones pictured which are 1 1/8″ cup hooks.  And they were already gold … no spray painting required!
  10. NOT PICTURED:  Spray paint for your frame, dowel rod, and paper mache cups.  Paper mache cups from Michael’s ($1 each; sold by the wood working stuff).  Staple gun.  Drill and drill bits.  Screwdriver.  Four 7/8″ screws (#8) with nuts to hold your earring/ring cups in place.

  1. Spray paint anything you don’t like the color of.  I painted the frame, dowel rod, and paper mache cups gold.
  2. Glue foam to backing board. All in one jewelry organizer | View From The Fridge
  3. Cover with fabric.  Pull tight and staple to back of backing. e_jewelstaple
  4. Set covered backing into frame and staple in place. All in one jewelry organizer | View From The Fridge
  5. On back of backing, plan your placement of necklace hooks;  drill pilot hole.  Screw knob screw into board from back, cut fabric where the screw comes through. All in one jewelry organizer | View From The Fridge
  6. Get a manicure … jeesh!
  7. Attach knobs to screws.
  8. The copper wire will be stretch between two of the 7/8″cup hooks.  Plan the placement of these hooks on the back of your backing board (I used three sets of hooks), drill holes, from the front screw hooks through foam into pilot holes in backing (this part was a bit frustrating … but eventually worked out).
  9. Stretch your copper between hooks. All in one jewelry organizer | View From The Fridge
  10. Drill two pilot holes where each of your paper mache cups will be.  Set cups in place, screw your screws in from the back and attach washers inside of cup to secure.
  11. On bottom edge of frame, drill two small holes on either side.  Screw larger cup hooks into holes for dowel rod.

I ended up painting the insides of the cups a minty blue (my color obsession at the moment) and labeling them with some letter stickers for the dollar spot at Target (with some mod podge over the top to keep ’em in place).

That’s it!  I can now SEE all my jewelry.  I can easily access it.  And … the whole display isn’t bad to look at!  Art for our {still very naked} bedroom?

Very nicely organized. I bet it’s easier to get ready in the morning now. I wear the same things over and over because I can’t bother to organize my stuff. That’s my dirty little secret.

I adore this!! Wow you did a really great job figuring out ways to use your hardware. The hanging earring wire and bottom bracelet holder look great, smart design. Love!

How cool is this!! Love what you did and the material you choose is gorgeous. My jewelry looks horrible as well. I need to make something to keep my chunky necklaces on!

Thanks, Courtney! I may add some bigger hooks to the side to help hold more chunky necklaces, too.

I love the way this idea can be adapted to suit whatever types of jewellery someone has more of (does that make sense?) I mean, additional places for rings if one had more rings for example. It’s such a versatile idea.
I have LOADS of jewellery, mostly because I never get rid of anything and have various methods of attempting to keep it organised. I think it’s great to keep it on display, you are so much more likely to wear and enjoy it if you can see it/find it.
