Crumbs and Chaos … A Real Life Home Tour

January 28, 2015
Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

Have you browsed Pinterest in the past three months?  Have you drooled over the beautiful home tours of your favorite bloggers?  Between the perfect burlap-wheat-mum-and-pumpkin Fall Tours and the rustic-modern-and-vintage-all-at-once-and-perfectly-balanced Christmas Home Tours, do you ever wonder how these ladies get it all done?  Do you ever wonder what their behind-the-scenes-not-so-picture-perfect homes look like?  Or do they always look that immaculate!?!  And … what exactly does a day in the life of a blogger look like?

Well today, I’ve teamed up with eight other bloggers to give you a behind the scenes look at our REAL homes and lives.  The day-to-day happenings, and the less-than-magazine-worthy-pictures.  We’re busy … far, far from perfect, and wear many hats (just like most moms).  So, grab your coffee, wine, or other beverage of choice, and join us for our ‘Real Life’ home tours (and feel good about your own home at the same time).

I’ll start with mine …

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

Well … I’m going to let you in on a little secret right up front:  We don’t get it all done.  Not even close.  Better Homes and Gardens is not going to come a-knockin’ anytime soon at this casa.  Actually, I’m going to guess that our ‘real’ home is likely more of a mess and chaos than yours right now.  I love to create and I can’t give that up.  Creativity is a bit … well … messy, my friends.  And I’m okay with that (maybe too okay?).

Yes … I can take staged pictures of our home for Fall and Christmas, but the truth is that it rarely looks that orderly and clean.

So let me show you a ‘day in the life’ over at our house … with NO staged shots, no cleaning up … just the real life happy chaos that we’re livin’ …

Here we go …

Owen and Charlie wake up anywhere between 6 and 7:30 most days, and come stumbling into our room to get us up.  (I’ve been trying out a new morning routine, so most days I’m already downstairs when I hear pitter patter from upstairs).

A banana and glass of water are required by them ASAP upon waking up.  And if we happen to be out of bananas … watch out, the morning just might start out with a couple of meltdowns (though we’re working on it).

Once Ben is up, and the other two are ready for their ‘real’ breakfasts, most mornings it looks like this:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The FridgeA couple things about this shot:

  1. Ben is in his Bumbo … on the counter.  I know, I know … this is strongly frowned upon.  I promise he only sits there when I’m standing right in front of him feeding him his breakfast (which happens to be ALL OVER his face).
  2. Owen and Charlie are sitting on stools at the counter and watching a show on the iPad.  Again … I know, bad parenting.  We should be sitting around the table as a family, calmly discussing our day ahead, our goals, all while eating a perfectly balanced breakfast.  #fail  At least they look happy this morning, though.  And they’re eating eggs which is not so bad, right?!?
  3. See that hammer on the counter in the background?  At our house, you’re extremely likely to find random tools laying around in odd places.
  4. That chalkboard/pinboard in the background.  In all my home tours I made it look neat and tidy.  This is how is actually usually looks … full of ‘art’, school forms to remember, and other random reminders, cards, and momentos.
  5. And lastly … if you look closely in the background we have two black folding chairs at our kitchen table.  Fancy huh?  Long story, but hopefully they will be replaced by some real chairs soon.

After breakfast, it’s time for trains (for Charlie) and Superheroes (for Owen).  Ben just sits where I place him in hopes of finding some entertainment nearby.  Charlie is obsessed … OBSESSED … with Thomas The Train.  Do you see how many engines he has?!?  He knows the name and number of each and every one.  (Also … I think his train collection may just be worth more than my wardrobe.  Do you know how much those little trains cost?!?).

And another view of those lovely black folding chairs at our table …

Upon my requests, the boys take their playing and toys out to the porch … a.k.a. The Toy Disaster Area.

Take a look:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

Seriously … what came through here last night?!?!  Oh wait … it looked like this last night as I conveniently turned off the lights, shut the doors, and pretended the space was neat and tidy.  Upon first light, however … it looks like a tornado came through and threw the chairs on the ground, all the little people out of their labeled bins, and tipped over Caramel (that’s the name of Owen’s horse you see there on his side).  Yikes.

Grandma gave Owen this ballon last night and he is requesting a vase to put it in to decorate the Firestation.  A budding decorator?!?  Since I can’t turn down his very creative request for decorating his space, I oblige and (instead of cleaning up this mess or breakfast in the kitchen), we make a vase for the balloon out of legos.  Because what Firestation isn’t complete without some Valentine’s Day decor?!?!

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

Now that the Firemen are content, I finally convince the boys that they should put some clothes on for the day.  Do you remember those beautiful shots of Owen and Charlie’s Big Boy Room Makeover?!?  Well … here’s what it looks like most days:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

I’ve lost track of how many pillow pets are housed in this room.  Best guess … north of ten.  They. are. obsessed.  Somedays, I’m not even sure how they fit in their beds with all those pillows.

As you can see above, Ben is mostly dressed, Charlie is dressed and has decided that a WonderWoman cape is a nice accessory today, and Owen has picked out a lovely outfit on his own.  Today I’m choosing my battles wisely, so black windpants with holes in the knees and a red more-than-worn-in-and-a-bit-too-small shirt will be just fine.

Now … speaking of beds, can I just show you something which makes me smile (most of the time)??  Here’s a shot of the inside of Charlie’s crib (which he freely and easily jumps in and out of all of the time):

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

See that Thomas book?  Well … this is like his security blanket.  He carries it around everywhere.  Everywhere.  He sleeps with it every night.  He carries it into the car with us everywhere we go.  And it’s a major ordeal if it’s missing (learned my lesson there).  It used to have a cover, but that’s long gone.  The pages are curled, ripped, and every now and then I find one that has completely come out.  Occasionly, he joins Matt and I in bed in the middle of the night.  He shows up, book in hand and climbs on top of me to get to the middle of the bed.  On several occasions, I’ve woken up with this book ON my face.  I wish he would fit a softer security item … like a blanket!!

But, back to our morning ….

Now that all three boys are dressed, I take a look at myself … aye!  I’m still in my lovely pajamas.  Apparently, these pajamas have also doubled as painting clothes as there’s plenty of Cloud White paint all over them.  I look sexy … lemme tell ya!!  It’s a good thing no one has knocked at the door because I’m a scary sight at the moment!  SCARY.

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

I get myself clothed, and just like that, it’s time for Ben’s nap.  Or attempt at a nap, I should say (not a fan of sleeping … ever).  And that brings me to the next room on the tour … his half finished nursery, complete with an airbed in the middle of the room.  It’s a nice touch, don’t you think?

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

His nursery was off to a slow start, but about a month before his arrival we kicked it into high gear and finished all kinds of projects in here.  Then he was born, and I haven’t touched one single thing since.  In my head, it’s going to be a super cute nursery.  However, he might be 5 before it becomes a reality!!

Oh, and that airbed?  Well … Ben hates sleeping.  Hates it.  We tried the cry it out method for several nights, and I just couldn’t do it any more.  He seriously cried for 4 hours straight every night.  It was awful.  The airbed is my compromise.  I don’t pick him up and feed him at night, I just go lay next to him (and sometimes hold his hand).  He is learning to put himself back to sleep with me laying there.  I’m hoping that soon he won’t need me there.  Baby steps here.

Back to our morning …

As I work on getting Ben down for his nap, I hear some screaming coming from downstairs.  I quickly deduce that it’s not a ‘hurt’ cry and hope that Owen and Charlie’s fighting will work itself out on its own.  Before I became a mom, I would never have guessed I could identify types of cries.  Who knew?!

After a bit … success.  Ben is asleep (and can you believe I actually dared to snap this picture?!?):

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

After his much too short nap, and a quick feeding, we’re off to the gym.  This is not a quick process, however … let me tell you!  To make my noon Warrior Sculpt class, we have to start packing up at 11am.  Hats, jackets, mittens, three kids strapped in the van  usually with snacks in hand, the diaper bag, yoga mat, and stroller and we’re off!

Except, apparently I forgot a hat for Ben:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

After the gym and lunch, I try to take some pictures of projects I have recently completed.  Ben is ‘helping’ … have I mentioned that he has an eye for photography.

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

The light is the best out on the porch (the other end of the toy disaster area … which is still not picked up, by the way).  I’ll let you in on a secret … my ‘wood’ backdrop is really just a roll of paper … see it there?  I hope that doesn’t ruin all my pictures for you going forward.

Since we’ve been gone for a couple hours at the gym, Ms. Mol has decided that she needs some attention, and wanders into my photo shoot.

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

How come this paper is laying in the middle of the floor?!?

And then makes herself comfortable:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

Don’t mind if I lay in the sun here for a bit!

After petting Molly for a bit, I head into the dining room to check on the other two boys.  To my happy surprise, they are playing nicely with each other.  You’ll notice, however that my nice table runner has been nicely placed in a ball in the middle of the table to make room for their trucks and puzzles.  Oh well … they are playing nice.

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

At least the dining table doesn’t look like this today (though obviously it’s been known to double as a laundry sorting space):

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

Instead, the laundry has been shoved into our bedroom, and Ben is planning to help me sort it now (can you see him amongst the mess)?!?

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

After attempting to put some laundry away, we’re off to soccer:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

It’s in a dome that’s right by our house, and Owen and Charlie absolutely LOVE it!!  Kortney from Lil’ Kickers was so nice to let both boys be in the same class (even though Charlie is by far the youngest).

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

A quick dinner, and then bath time for all three:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

I am going to be very sad when they don’t all fit in this tub at once.

And speaking of the bathroom, you may remember our ‘Wash, Brush, Floss, Flush‘ from our Bathroom Update?  Well … the ‘F’ in Flush has been mysteriously missing for months now.  My guess is that it has something to do with our four legged family member.  She has a thing eating for cardboard letters.  So … for now it just says ‘LUSH’.  Hmmm …

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

A couple bedtime stories and we’ve usually managed to have them all asleep by 8!  That’s when I can do everything else.  Cleaning (or not), laundry (or not), shower?, load the dishwasher?, and …. blog.  After they go to bed is usually the only time I work on this.  Occasionally during the day, I’ll post some social media updates, and in the mornings (before they wake up), I’ll schedule some posts, but the vast majority of blogging is done at night.

That’s it!  That happens to be a typical day in our lives these days.  The good.  The bad.  And the mess.

I’m happy to have creative boys:

with messy hands:

Perfectly Imperfect ... A Real Life Home Tour from View From The Fridge

and a very happy home!

Like I said, I love to work on projects.  I can’t stand NOT creating stuff.  And I want my boys to be creative, too, so that’s what we do.  All this creativity does come at the expense of a perfectly clean home (and sometimes at the expense of a fully dressed and put together mama), however.  That’s just how my priorities fall right now.  Everyone has their priorities and their thing, and that’s awesome!  If your home is immaculate because that’s your thing … you go girl!  If your thing is to always be perfectly presentable in public … rock on!  If you’re an awesome cook and spend your time and priorities in the kitchen … that’s fantastic (and also, my husband secretly wants me to be more like you)!  Whatever makes your home ‘real’ is all that matters!  I just thought it would be fun to share ours today!

And if you’re dying for more behind-the-scenes and more real life … pop on over to visit these ladies and see what kind of chaos (or lack there of) is happening around their homes:

Thanks for your honesty and bravery…it makes you so real and I love, love, love that! We ought to capture a day in the real life of working dads…because I picture peaceful lunches where food isnt inhaled bc the kids are finished well before you, nice car rides home listening to the radio and not children’s cd’s, having a real life conversation with other adults……haha! Oh Katie! This was seriously SO MUCH fun to read!!! I feel like I was reading my own story (with two extra boys thrown in the mix of course!). Carson is absolutely OBSESSED with all things Thomas too and our mornings look just the same with breakfast in front of a Thomas or Sesame Street episode while I’m gulping back a cold coffee with the very same paint on my pj’s! Crazy! With busy days like these, it’s no wonder the weeks, months and years even are flying by oh so quickly!!! Thanks for sharing Katie, absolutely loved reading this!!!

I see your day and it totally remind me of mine with the three boys (except going to the gym). Oh and I think my boys would totally get along with yours. Looks like they have a lot of the same toys. Aiden is obsessed with trains. I think we own every Thomas the train they have. But I got a lot of mine off ebay brand new. They are so expensive.

Thanks for sharing real life. Your sons are adorable. Lots of beautiful memories being made. The other day I came upon a beautiful website my 12 year old son thought our home should be more like. The talented blogger is a photographer with 3, almost grown, daughters. I explained how each photo was staged and that unless he wanted to live in a museum, help clean round the clock, and not have pets, meals or hobbies to get over it. Love to look at beautiful blogs, but the real ones are better!

    • Reply Katie January 31, 2015 at 7:44 pm

You’re so sweet, Candace!! That is sort of hilarious that your 12 year old son found an online family to aspire to! Those are my feelings exactly … I love my messy and creative boys, I love my very messy and sometimes naughty dog (who shreds books occasionally), and I love my projects … even when they happen to be all over the house in various stages of completeness. I like beautiful ‘magazine-like’ blogs, too, but I’m just not cut out to be like that in real life. Sounds like you’ve got your priorities in line, too! Hope you’re having a great weekend, and I really enjoyed your comment. Thanks for stopping by!
