Bright Beginnings to 2014!

January 7, 2014
JCP Light Fixture

We love a lot about our home.  It’s old … really old.  It has some very unique features.  It has a great layout.  It has room for toys (unlike our previous place).  The light fixture situation, however, was not one of our favorite things.

This past weekend Matt and I had our ‘Christmas Day’.  We seem to have made this a tradition every year.  Instead of getting each other presents for Christmas, we plan a day after and celebrate just the two of us.  We usually go to lunch/brunch, shopping for ourselves, and then to a movie.  The shopping is usually great because of the after Christmas / New Year’s sales.  I’ll spare you all the details of what we found, but I did want to share a couple GREAT finds we came upon this year … light fixtures!!!  We spent most of the afternoon at the Galleria, an upscale mall near us with all of the fancy, boutique-y (and expensive) stores.  On our way to the movie, however, we stopped off at JC Penny.  I used to swear off this store (strongly disliked it), and would go out of my way to avoid walking in to the mall through this store (even if that meant parking further away).  But over the past couple years, I’ve developed a new opinion, and my dislike for this store is turning around.  I actually enjoy this store now.  They’re making them brighter (one of the things I hated about the old dark, dingy stores), and they’re starting to carry some awesome brands (especially in the home area).

We had about 15 minutes to kill, and happened to wander by the clearance section … and we hit the JACKPOT (at least to us)!!  A huge selection of light fixtures marked down at least 70%.  Matt doesn’t get excited about many home decor items (hates curtains with a passion, could care less about my decorative lanterns, etc), but he happens to love light fixtures (and happens to hate our current fixtures).

We ended up walking out with a cartload of fixtures.  So many, I couldn’t even fit in the car on the way home (Matt had to make two trips home).

I wanted to share what we came up with (in case you have a JCP nearby, and are in need of some light fixtures)!  Most of them are also sold online, but at the store they’re about 50% less than even the online price!

Fixture #1 was this Round wood Pendant Light.  We bought two for $39 each.  They were originally $195 a piece!!

We put one in our entryway:

Huge improvement for only $39!!!

Much better than the old fixture that was hanging here (I was so excited I didn’t get any good shots of the ‘before’ fixture, but you can sort of get the idea from this shot).

The other fixture like this is destined for Owen and Charlie’s Big Boy Room which is currently under construction (refinishing floors at the moment), but I thought it had a similar feel to the one on this inspiration board for their room:

Okay, on to the next fixture we purchased … one for our living room:

I couldn’t find it online, but the tag said it was originally $295.  We got it for $58.99!!!

Our old one was fine, but not exactly what we wanted:

Our new fixture is a huge improvement … (excuse the mess everywhere else … trying to re-style the mantel after Christmas):

New Light Fixture … huge improvement!

On to the next lamp we purchased (also in the picture above), this Bent Wood Table Lamp, also $195 originally … we paid $39!

And lastly, we purchased three of these Exposed Bulb Pendants.

Exposed Pendant Lights

We think they’re destined for our bathroom to replace some existing less-than-exciting pendants.  These were each $60 originally … we paid $11.99!  They’re in storage now until we’re ready to tackle the bathroom …

JCP Light Fixtures

$180 worth of lights for $36!!

Did you do the math with me??  That’s $1060 worth of light fixtures for $211!  Can’t beat that!  And we made it to the movie on time!

What about you guys?  Hit up any good New Year’s sales?

Wow those are some great deals. I love getting bargains on stuff. I’m more excited to brag on how little I paid for something. I really don’t know which one is my favorite. The one in The front entrance looks fabulous.

P.S. I love all the bead board you have throughout your home!!

I will have to think of JCP next time I go to the mall. Like you that’s a store I generally avoid. But you really got some nice fixtures (I really like the ones in the family room) for a great price.
