We envisioned a quiet weekend this past weekend.
Instead, it was non-stop, action packed, exhausting, need-another-weekend-to-recover-from-this-weekend kinda weekend, but also was absolutely a blast! We trick-or-treated, we dined with a total of 9 kids in full costume, 8 adults with 6+ pitchers of beer, we walked, played at the park, raked a million+ leaves, jumped in the piles of leaves, bagged the leaves, and slept about 0 (see explanation below .. ahem, Baby Ben).
The reason for this whole post, however, is the Baby shower my sister and I threw for our cousin, Betsy, on Sunday. Betsy and her hubby ‘Phil The Man’ (long story on that nick name …) are expecting a baby boy in just under three weeks (their first bambino), and we had a brunch to celebrate! It was a relatively small gathering … just the ladies on my Dad’s side of the family and my mom, but it was fun!
We decided on a Book Themed Baby Shower, and I thought I’d share a couple pictures of the party here. It was a fun ‘theme’. It was simple and easy to put together, but fun and festive at the same time!
Our menu for brunch included:
- Dragons Love Tacos ‘Walking Tacos’
- Green Eggs and Ham ‘Spinach Quiche’
- Where The Wild Things Are ‘Veggies and Dip’
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar ‘Fruit Salad’
- If You Give a Dog A Donut ‘Donut Cake’
- Goodnight Moon ‘Moon Cookies’
- One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish ‘Swedish Fish’
We bought each of these books, and gave them to Betsy as her shower gift from us. Decor and present … these books worked double duty for us!
We also served hot apple cider, a blue fruit punch, coffee, diet coke, and water (but didn’t have any fancy book tie-ins with those).
The decorations were very minimal …
We hung up some hats and socks and displayed the books The Cat In The Hat and Fox In Socks on the mantel:
I made a backdrop of old book pages and printed off some book page covers to make a bunting:
I also took some clear mason jars, chalk painted them white, distressed, waxed, and then filled with those beautiful blue hydrangeas that you can see above (and in a couple other of the pictures above). I forgot to take more pictures of those! Those flowers were stunning!
The utensils were wrapped up in blue napkins with a blue bakers twine tie, and labeled with a sign that said, “And the dish ran away with the spoon …”:
I placed Baby’s Breath around the room and used books (that I covered with various colors of paper) as decoration:
For the games, I found this fun ‘Children’s Book Trivia Game’ on Creating Really Awesome Free Things, and it was perfect for the shower.
And I’m sure you’re thinking … ‘what an adorable pen she has!”.
I know, right?!?!
Apparently, I decided the pens needed some flair, too. Baby BOY kind of flair …
All I did was make some yarn Poms (using THIS TUTORIAL) and attach to the top of some cheap blue pens.
My soon-to-be-Sister-in-Law also came up with Baby Shower Gift Bingo to keep us all focused on all the goods Betsy was opening!
Betsy got some really fun gifts …
And my mom had someone make this book tote for all Baby Morris’ new book collection (specially decorated with all the books on the ‘menu’ at the shower):
and the back …
Absolutely adorable, huh? I wish I was that artistic (and had that good of handwriting) …
And now we wait patiently to hear of Baby Morris’ arrival. I love babies. And baby birth stories. And all the excitement around baby births. I should have been a labor & delivery nurse …
What I don’t love???
The fact that Ben is sleeping worse than he did as a newborn. Yep. Every hour on the hour we spend some time together. He just loves me that much. And I’m delirious. Almost fell asleep at Yoga on Monday.
I have high hopes for tonight, however …
Well … what is your favorite baby shower theme? Or do you go theme-less?? My hubby hates themes … thinks they’re silly. What do you think?
Oh … and did you happen to notice something different AND AWESOME about the blog in the past couple days???
I’m in the process of updating the look. And … since I’m basically clueless when it comes to these technical-behind-the-scenes kinda stuff, Clyde Sanchez is helping me out. Thank god for him!! He’s the talented and creative Courtney (of Crafts By Courtney)’s husband and he is an awesome web designer, SEO expert, and all around technical guru. And he’s got great taste. Stop over and say hello to Clyde and tell him how awesome he is.
Things will continue to be updated over the next couple weeks. It’s very much a work in progress right now, but Clyde’s got it all under control (which is waaaay more than I can say for myself these days!!).
Anyway, thanks for stopping by today! If this post doesn’t make sense, I blame the lack of sleep. In which case, just browse through the pictures and ignore my rambling …
