Bedroom Makeover … The ‘Unfinished Reveal’

November 11, 2015
Industrial Master Bedroom Makeover Progress - One Room Challenge | View From The Fridge

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Do you know who said this?  Can you take a guess?

I’ll help … it was Michael Jordan.

And what in the world does this have to do with my Master Bedroom Reveal today for the Fall 2015 One Room Challenge?

Well, you see … I failed this time.  And not even in a small … barely noticeable … I have an excuse for that way.  My room is not done.  I could not finish the challenge in the 5 weeks.  Our bedroom is still a work-in-process.  Failure.

BUT … it is SO MUCH better than when we started.  I jumped in this challenge at the very last minute, and I knew it would be a lot harder than the previous two One Room Challenges that I have participated in (if you missed them, or if you’re curious … you can see those two makeovers HERE and HERE).  It took an entire week (of the short 5 weeks total) to even come up with a vision for our bedroom (see that HERE).  And once I had that vision, things didn’t move as quickly as I had hoped.  And that’s why we’re only half finished with the space at the end of the challenge this morning.

Excuses, excuses … I know.  I hear you … and I totally agree.  Did I put 100% of myself into getting this space finished in time?  No, probably not.  But … if I hadn’t taken on this challenge 5 weeks ago, I would still be ‘pondering’ a new space and probably wouldn’t have even started.  And so maybe … if you use your imagination just a bit … it is sort of a success.  Yep … that’s what I’m going with here.

So … if you’re stopping by from the One Room Challenge link up page … I’m so thrilled you’re here.  And I’m also very sorry to disappoint.  I can’t wait to check out each and every one of your makeovers, as I know they will be spectacular.  My makeover, however, will have to wait for a bit longer.  It’s coming … I promise, and I’m hoping the wait will be worth it.  I’d love for you to check back in a week or two!

And if you have no clue what I’m talking about … I’ll clue you in quickly.  The One Room Challenge (ORC) is a semi-annual challenge put on by Linda over at the blog Calling It Home.  Basically, a bunch of bloggers join in with the mission to makeover ONE space in their homes in five weeks.  I choose our sad looking ‘Master’ bedroom for this season, and here’s how it started out:

Master Bedroom Makeover - The Before Tour | View From The Fridge

Plenty of olive green everywhere, an old queen size mattress (like really, really disgustingly old), and a bit laking on the closet space).  See more of the ‘befores’ from 5 weeks ago HERE.

And … since you stopped in today, I will at least show you the good progress we HAVE made in the room.  Enjoy (and use your imaginations to picture what it can … and hopefully will … look like when it’s done):

You’ll notice the walls are painted (more on that HERE).  What you can’t probably tell is that we’ve upgraded our bed to a KING and we just received our new mattress.  Molly is a huge fan (as she refused to move for any pictures today).    We also got new bedding which I love …

And Molly loves …

We installed a ‘wall of curtains’ to cover our newly created closet space:

Now … here’s what we don’t have finished:

  • A new rug … you’ll notice the olive green one is still a kickin’ under bed and under foot
  • A headboard for our bed (which I actually just finished up last night, so stay tuned on that one).
  • An entryway light (our old ‘boob’ light is still hanging nicely by its wires).
  • A gallery wall (here’s the current state of the ‘gallery’:)

One lonely picture in our ‘gallery’ so far …

  • A new tall (rather than short and long) dresser that will be fully on the outside of the curtains:

Not exactly the look I was going for with the dresser and curtain wall interference …

  • A wall of reclaimed wood (stay tuned for progress on that shortly)

The wall behind the best is ready for an awesome feature!

  • And a bedside lighting solution (lights and hardware is here … just waiting to be hung):

Yellow bedside lighting soon to be installed

  • And nightstands … and a bench … and some accents.

Like I said … we still have a ways to go, my friends.

Thanks for stopping by, even if you were disappointed by the lack of progress over here in the Stahl household.  I hope you’ll be back to see the final, final reveal (in my head it’s fabulous!!).  In the meantime … I’m going to crawl into my new ginormous, grown up bed, with new sheets and read my latest obsession:

On a recommendation from a friend (thanks, Sara) I bought this book (get it HERE), and I’m obsessed.  I got it yesterday, and there’s a good chance I will be done with it before tomorrow is over.  Love.  It.  It makes me feel good about the chaos that is our family and the beautiful mess that is our life and home.  And I’m sure I’ll feel better about my One Room Challenge failure today.

If you got through all that … and you’re still wishing for some actual completed room makeovers (imagine that), head over to Calling It Home and see what the nearly 100 other participants have done with their spaces over the past 5 weeks.  And I’m guessing none of them will start with a quote about failure like mine …

First of all, I LOOOOOOVE what you’ve done so far and am so excited about where you’re going with things! The black is absolutely gorgeous!!! Second, you’ve got an amazing take on things my friend and you’re absolutely right, the ORC isn’t about killing yourself to complete a room that you don’t totally love just for the sake of getting it done – you’ve got an amazing vision and I can’t wait to see it come to life my friend! xo

I know how you feel. The last ORC I didn’t finish (we were doing a bathroom and honeslty there are still things to finish – oh well). But so far things are looking beautiful! Love how you have used the space. It feels so cozy! Love your vizsla! We have one that blops himself right in the middle of all my bed pillows the minute I make the bed! Good luck with finishing!

    • Reply Katie November 13, 2015 at 9:22 am

Thanks for the encouragement, Lianna! And yes, Molly sometimes plops herself down while I’m trying to make the bed forcing me to make it with her still in it!! Good thing she’s cute, right?!? Have a great weekend, and thanks so much for stopping by today!

  • Reply adrienne November 12, 2015 at 6:12 am

I feel you, Katie. I didn’t finish either. You have a fantastic start – love where this is headed. Can’t wait to see it when it is done!!

The room will get done and I look forward to checking back to see your reveal. Oh and it’s already look fantastic! Also sidenote…I had a Vizsla and I lurv them so much. Your Molly is adorable!

Thanks, Christine. Miss Molly really does love the new bed a lot. IN fact she’s slept in (and tucked under the covers) every day since we got it. #spoiledvizsla Vizslas really are the best … I’m convinced. :) Thanks for the sweet words … and we’ll keep going, right?!?

Oh, Katie, I am right there with you. My ORC kitchen makeover is far from being completed. I really thought I could pull this off by the deadline but life happened and our plans got derailed. I can totally relate to feeling like a failure. Your space looks amazing already, though! I love the bedding and curtains and that light fixture is just crazy amazing! Your plans for the rest of the space sound awesome and I know you’re going to pull it off with gorgeous results!

I’m not the only one?!?!? Hooray! Thanks for stopping by with the news that I’m not the only one that just couldn’t do it this time around. I really am not that upset because I love the progress, but I was hoping to be able to share the reveal along with everyone else this season. Oh well!! Maybe next time?!? Have a great weekend!

Love the wall color, the bedding, the light fixture…. but most of all, love the quote! You did an amazing job, so don’t worry about not finishing in time. The room looks great, and I’m sure with a bit more time you’ll have it done exactly as you want it :)

Katie I can totally relate! But this is reall life and I appreciate reading a post that reminds me that I’m not the only out there whose home isn’t magazine ready. I love the dark walls in your room! It’s amazing how even with the dark paint, the room is still bright and inviting. And I love those pillows on your bed! Thanks for sharing :)

    • Reply Katie November 13, 2015 at 9:15 am

Thanks, Shonee! My home is far, far from magazine ready, but I do like making changes (even if they take forever). Thanks for the sweet words and encouragement! Can’t wait for the room to be done (maybe before the end of the year?!?!).

If you get duplicate comments from me, sorry! I was typing a response and the dog bumped the computer and it disappeared! The room already looks good and you have a vision so I consider it a win, even if you didn’t “finish” the room in time! Keep going, I love where it’s headed!

I think the goal behind the ORC is about pushing us to get things moving, where we otherwise would not. I still say bravo for forward progress – you wouldn’t be where you are now if you hadn’t started six weeks ago, right? Thanks for keeping it real!

Progress is such a god thing, right? And really, there’s no failure here. This wasn’t a “real deadline.” You’re not going to lose your job (etc.) How wonderful that you signed on to a challenge that got you farther than you would have gotten otherwise.

Love what you’ve done so far!

Oh man Katie!! This challenge is so tough! I can’t believe how much we finished in six weeks, but there were still some things that I didn’t get a chance to do yet. I would not consider this a failure at all. Can’t wait to see the bedroom when it is all done!
