A Sea of Red … to Crisp, White, and Modern {An Entryway Makeover}

Red Entryway Makeover ... BEFORE! One Room Challenge Spring 2015

Today is a fantastic day for a couple reasons.  Let me share …

#1.  It’s my birthday.  {I know, I know … patting myself on the back over here}

but … almost as exciting …

#2.  It’s kick off day to The One Room Challenge … Spring Edition:

Now … if you are new around here, you might be wondering what on earth I’m referring to.  Well, allow me to clarify.  The One Room Challenge is put on my Linda at Calling It Home.  Basically … it’s a SIX week challenge where each participant is attempting to makeover ONE ROOM in their homes (hence the name … ).  It starts today (which, again, is a fabulous day to kick this off) and ends on May 7th with the big reveal!

If you’ve been around here a bit, you may remember the ORC from Fall of last year.  We made over Owen and Charlie’s ‘Big Boy’ Room, and lemme tell you … I think we bit off a little too much.  #stressful.  We did, however, complete it and it’s still my favorite room in our house!

Since I’m finding myself with a considerable lack of time to work on anything around here lately, we bitting off a bit smaller space this time:  Our {Overwhelmingly Red} Entryway.

Think I’m joking about the red-ness?  Let me ‘welcome you into our home’ to see for yourself (note:  this is the first impression all of our guests get of our home).

Upon walking in the door, … you’re greeted by some hooks to hang your coat and a nice bench to take off your shoes:

And where should I put my coat?!?

Oh wait … there’s no room for guests to hang their coats because ours are all over the place!!  Also … that bench serves it’s purpose, but has seen better days and is a bit too small for the space.  Here’s another view of our not-so-welcoming entry ‘nook’:

I guess I could have picked up that toy styrofoam dart (there in the bottom right corner) for the picture, but what’s the point?!?  Jackets, shoes, sand, dirt, (and apparently toy darts) … scattered about.  Welcome to our home … Feel free to shove your shoes somewhere amongst the clutter and throw your jacket on the floor (since all the hooks are taken).  And see that bin up above the shoes overflowing with mittens, gloves, and hats?  Well … that ‘storage’ solution is just not working for our family.  At best the boys take aim and try to throw their gloves and hats up there hoping to ‘make a basket’.  At worst, they just give up and throw all their stuff on the ground.

Moving past the cluttery, dirty, and not-so-functional entry ‘nook’ are a couple of doors.  One that leads to our pseudo coat closet and the other, much more noticeable, giant sliding barn door that hides all our crap stuff:

Also … see that lonely owl on the shelf up there?  Well … I sort of forgot to decorate this space.  I meant to give him some friends or at least a couple fun objects to add some interest, but I forgot.  For three and a half years. On the positive side … it has potential for a makeover!

Here’s a better view of that barn door (which I love, but the red has just worn out it’s welcome here):

More redness (and a big wall that also has been forgotten about since we moved in):

Aren’t you glad I’m so concerned with the awesome first impression we make on all our guests?!?  Ha!

And one more view from our kitchen:

So … what’s the plan for this makeover, you ask?

We’re going to lighten up the space using our favorite paint color …

…. wait for it ...

Yep  …  because we’re crazy like that.

But more than just painting, we need to add a little interest to the space, repair some damaged paneling (or replace?) and some chipping paint (and I mean really chipped paint) on the door, and attempt to add some {visually appealing} storage solutions for all our crap … with extra room for guests’ things.

Well, let’s get right to it!  Here’s my inspiration … drum roll please …

Lots of white and black with some fun pops of color thrown in!  Oh … and a deep Kona stained built in bench for the ‘nook’.  with storage.  and hopefully CUTE storage!  I should also point out those two key words in that last sentence … BUILT IN.  Yep … I want a sturdy, oversized, and functional (oh, and cute) BUILT IN bench in the nook.  You’ll also notice there’s not much red in the inspiration board.  And that’s on purpose.  I’m done with the sea of red for a good long while.  Bright, crisp, clean, functional, and WELCOMING is what we’re going for here!

Now for the specifics.  Here’s my first cut at our checklist and plan:

  1. Paint walls, sliding barn door, inside of front door, trim, and ceiling WHITE.
  2. Accent color on wall on top part of nook(?)
  3. Build a built in Bench with storage in the nook
  4. New hooks and other storage in the nook
  5. New Rug (that’s not red)
  6. Some decor for the large wall and shelf (possibly a picture ledge with a mix of frames photos, art, and other narrow pieces of interest).

If you stopped over from Calling It Home … welcome!!  I’m so glad you’re here, and I’m thrilled (and also a bit nervous) to get this space cleaned and fixed up with you over the next 6 weeks!  I’d love ANY ideas or thoughts on the space currently and how to make it better six weeks from now!  Constructive criticism is also welcomed (I’ll put on by big girl panties).

    I dont know your kids. They might be well behaived. Mine? Not so much at least not when it comes to shoes by the door. So to simplify I have added shoe storage in boxes on wheels underneath the bench in our hallway. With the initial of the person whose shoes should go in which box. Yes. The boxes/bins are crazy inside but slide them under the bench and I dont need to see it. Happy me!
