{my attempt at} St. Pat’s Ombre Cookies!
Technically . . . Ombre week was over Friday.
But, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I decided to make try to make some green ombre cookies. Thought I’d share my two attemps. Not quite what I’d call a success, but they tasted good!
Last week, on my Friday Faves, I included these green ombre cookies from A Sweet Spot Home
These look awesome, right? Instead of following her recipe exactly, I figured I could modify slightly and come up with a good product (I wasn’t entirely right . . . .) I have been on a gluten free, diary free diet for a bit (trying to figure out what’s wrong with my stomach), so I set off to find some sugar cookie mix that would work for the cookies.
Ombre cookie attempt 1:
I mixed up the cookie batter (mix + vanilla + almond milk + buttery ‘spread’), and separated it into three. I just used green food coloring to color each of the thirds a slightly different shade of green.
Next, I made a small ball of each color, and rolled them together to form a big round cookie ball (here’s where things went south . . . )
Baked for 12 minutes, and came out like this . . .
They tasted good, but didn’t exactly look like I was planning . . .
Of to by another box of cookie mix, and on to Ombre Cookie attempt 2:
This time, I figured I’d just make regular (white) sugar cookies, and make the frosting green Ombre. I used this super easy frosting recipe.
Once baked and frosted, I used the ‘spray paint’ to try to get an Ombre effect (sort of successful . . . ).
I started ‘spray painting’ at one side, applying a light coat, and gradually applied a thicker coat as I got to the other side.
Next time, I’d probably try to go with a food coloring that is a bit more ‘natural’ so I could feel better about giving these to my kiddos (Matt and I ate most of these green ones!). This article gives some good ideas for natural, organic food coloring. Worth checking out! At least we ran our 7K yesterday, so we can enjoy these cookies today!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! What are your plans?
